iPhone cable (with mic) for UE or JH IEM's

Hello all,

I'm a professional musician and audiophile. I have an active Linn - Keltik system at home and was looking forward to the ultimate solution for when I'm on the road.

I've owned a Sennheiser system for on-stage monitoring for ages with my own mold (the kind where you put the earbuds in), but I've recently discovered UE and JH custom pro versions. I fell in love! Now I'm undecided between a UE-18 and a JH-16 so I'll be waiting for reviews on this forum before I make up my mind.

Since I'll mainly be using them for music listening with my iPhone (not doing much live gigging lately), I had asked UE about the possibility of a custom IEM with a cable with mic for iPhone. They said that their engineering dpt is looking into that but since they're detachable, when it does come out, I can just buy it and replace it.

Reading through this forum I've also seen that there are other brands that produce cables for UE and JH customs. So I was wondering if any of you knew of and advised a cable that would fit in these IEM's and work as a headset to make and receive calls with the iPhone.

I haven't heard any mention of any such cables here so far, so I'm also curious what people have to say... but I'm definitely glad to hear this news you mentioned

If I understood right he's looking for an actual cable w/inline mic (like the TF 10vi cable), not just an adapter

Here's his original reply:

Unfortunately, we do not have a vi cable for our custom series.
But I can tell you that engineering is looking into this.
In addition, our universal fit earphones that indicate "VI" have this capability.
Also, if we decide to move forward with this for our customs, the mic will be built on the cable and our cable is detachable.
With that said, you can certainly make your custom purchase now and when the cable is introduced, you can simply purchase it.

That's correct. Unplug the one the IEM's come with and plug in the one with a mic. Preferably without quality loss!

Doesn't UE make such a cable? I thought they were bringing one to market a couple of years ago. Shure has one but I don't think it's compatible to JH Audio IEMs.

You can use a short custom cable from JH (18 inches) + one of those phone adapters (shure/AT/etc make some) to get a normal length cable

1) Heavy no ?
Normal mic on those iphone cables are small and light. those shure adaptors looks heavy and seems that clip is a must

2) quality loss definitely.

I was going to start a thread about the Griffin iTalk - I have been using this for a week or so, and then swapped back to just the standard cable extension for my Denon C751s, and swapped back straight away...

With the iTalk (or maybe it is a four pole thing, which is why I was going to start a thread) it is as if there is an impedance adapter inside - the volume is less (with direct a/b'ing) and the overall sound smoother, less shouty...

Horses for courses, maybe I just like a quality loss (if this is confirmed as fact) yet I am very happy with the iTalk (or four pole adapter - if the impedance change is within the iPhone (3GS) itself)...

So, I guess my discussion point here - Is it that the iPhone changes impedance according to if a three, or four pole adapter is plugged in, or does the iTalk have an adapter inside...

IMO,

"I am still enjoying my rig currently with (for example) stock lod/ic"

doesn't equal or have any link with quality loss..

Its something like people still enjoying 320kbps music, or even 128kbps, when they are listening to lossless at home.

any updates to this from UE, JH or Westone? or even from UM/Alien Ears/etc??  I wonder if there is some sort of engineering restraints that is preventing such a cable w/inline mic from being made, or if its just the general lack of interest from all these companies (their main audience: musicians & audio engineers who don't care use their customs with an iphone?)

I would imagine they would sell quite a few of these if they made one.. I've seen enough people saying they are using customs right out of an iphone.
