optical out or digital out can come from the docking station, doesn't have to be on the player itself. But no wadia. too much equipments already.

Does the OP want a portable setup or no? Hard to determine from the question.

Does the Mac Mini not have USB and Optical out? I see that in their signature.

If portable is a must, then rockboxed Iriver it the best bet, as others have mentioned. If not portable.. well any PC running almost any OS will do it. Like umm say your Mac Mini.

I would assume so, since it is posted in the Portable Source Gear sub-forum.

I use a MacBook pro. I know of nothing else.
Wouldn't any Mac OR PC work?

ALAC or FLAC okay

Since I posted the question, I have relaxed my critieria.

FLAC or ALAC, digital out or optical out. yes, portability is a priority.

If it turns out it is cheaper to use or easier to get an Onkyo ND-S1 (or Wadia 170i), then I'll do so. e.g., if it is hard to get an several years old iRiver; if I need to get another $150-$200 player.

On a side note, Mac mini uses the same output jack for analog-out & optical-out.
