Shorter cable for portabilty. Possibility of improved sound?

I have the coiled cable and haven't had the urge to recable, it's short enough to lug around.

The ATH-M50 cable is one of the best things about it IMO.

Wish more manufacurers went down the "single sided, coiled" route.

There is no reason (logical reason) I have ever been presented with for a cable improving the sound...

The ATH-M50 are very easy to open though, so it shouldn't be tough to recable them if you wanted to.

You can just reterminate the current cable with a plug of your choice. To be honest expensive cables are only worth it when you have a top notch system to begin with.
If you want another cable you can recable with Mogami. It's cheap and good stuff.

I would think better cables would be very beneficial to "cheaper" headphones, as I'd imagine part of making a particular model cheaper would be using a lesser cable.

Anyone mind pointing me to a DIY guide recabling for the M50's. I am also a newbie to recabling. Thanks in advance

Best "guide" I've seen so far for M50 recabling is this:

http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/484744/crosstalk-on-audio-technica-m50#post_6601078

One thing to note is that the stock wires inside the M50 that connect the right driver to the left are coated with some kind of enamel. You'll need to burn off the coating from the wire tips before soldering.

If I am just going to use the stock cable do I need to worry about the connection to the right driver, or do I just deal with the pair of three? Thanks.

If you are not concerned with crosstalk, then you can leave the left-driver-to-right-driver wire alone. I hope that answers your question. But otherwise, please elaborate more on what you are planning to do.

I'm just going to shorten the cable to a more portable length, I'm not going to switch the cable out/mess with the crosstalk or anything else; just shorten the cable.

I see. And I take it you will be shortening the cable from the headphone end, in order to keep the original plug. So yeah, you can just resolder the 3 main wires. Best to test the wires with a multimeter before soldering in case they are also coated with enamel.

The other way to do it, as apatN mentioned, is to shorten the cable from the plug end. You won't need to even open up the headphones that way, but it requires soldering on a new plug.

I did a real crappy job on the soldering, but they work...

Thanks Yoga.
