I am also pretty sure that someone here is going to mention the Musical Fidelity...(drums fingers)...
Wait, hold on a minute... I'm getting some inspiration... AH HA, the Musical Fidelity AC3, of course! Good thing I was the first to mention it.

Actually, I've only heard of the MF unit, but reviews have been decent enough.

nOrh CD-1...its only $800
you can use the extra $$ for a power cord and tube upgrade.

The guy in the following thread likes the CD-1 over his Naim.
Holy crap.

Get an ES player and mod it up from Dan Wright.

Or get the nOrh CD-1 if you want tubes in your signal chain (which I recommend).

Hey Scott!

I highly recommend you put Meridian on your audition list. I am very happy with mine. It makes moooosic!

I second Vertigo's suggestion. Something from Arcam or Rega. You can't beat British made stuff.

HEY MOO!
I can see your Meridian rocks.

You might also want to look at the new Pioneer multi-player when it comes out. They usually get rated pretty highly (relatively) for their DVD machines. I think it might be towards the top of your range, though.

I'd say if you're looking for CD playback exclusively and your ears want a smooth, non-fatiguing sound without losing resolution, then go for a tubed CD player like the Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 or (even better) the Heart CD6000. The nOrh CD-1 looks like an interesting prospect even though you'd have to send it back to Thailand if you ever have problems with it. Plus, the owner of nOrh fibbed a little about the player's design development...

But if you're even considering jumping on the hi-rez bandwagon, then I'd opt for one of those SACD/DVD-A machines...

Thanks for the suggestions. I will be sorting this out over the next few months. I don't dislike my current setup, just looking for something better. I haven't really spent much money in this area for about 5-6 years. So I guess it is about time.

INTERCONNECTS

And, after you get done picking your favorite flavor of CD player, look into some really good interconnects. You will be very surprised. Especially at the price level you are shopping at. Good luck!

I am still planning to use the Magnan Vi interconnects I have. I have not found many cables that are better.

New Jolida JD 100 tubed CD

I've been auditioning cdp's in your price range as well, though I still haven't found "the one" yet. I just ordered Jolida's new JD 100 tubed output cdp from Vacuum Tube Valley for $900.00. I'm expecting it today or tomorrow. http://www.vacuumtube.com/ The previous model had a smooth, sweet, analog like sound but some units had dependability issues. The new one has been significantly upgraded to address these issues. I haven't heard it yet but I'm hoping it'll be a keeper. I'll let you know.

STRENGTHS, AND WEAKNESSES

There are many players out there that do one, or two things right, but not everything well.
I think the Rega Jupiter 2000 is a very nice player that has a huge soundstage which is great for headphones. It also sounds killer on classical music.
Another player that no one ever buys is the Adcom GCD-750. With the right cables this is one of the most transparent CD players I have ever heard. It is also very dynamic, and extremly fast.
My favorite is the Arcam CD 23 FMJ. I feel that it has almost no weaknesses. It is very fast, dynamic, detailed, and musical all at the same time. Kind of reminds me of Etymotic Research canalphones. I really like the Arcam sound. The next CD player I buy will most certainly be an Arcam. Happy hunting!
