Anything Beatles

I go straight for The Beatles catalog as it's what I'm most familiar with...in fact I'm doing it now with my first proper Head-Fi setup:

AKG K701
Benchmark DAC1 USB

It's sounding absolutely brilliant!

+ btw for me...

The Knife - Marble House - dynamic test? contrast between highs and lows i guess...
Fleet Foxes - various songs from their debut - acoustics
Discovery - Carby (ft. Ezra Koenig) - fun electronic music
Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit - grungy guitars
jj - Things Will Never Be The Same Again - highs
Dan Deacon - snookered - highs
Kanye West - Love Lockdown - bass
Vampire Weekend - Giant - highs (eruption of the BRASS melody @ 1:30 is amazing)

and for pure "musical emotional value" test... hard to describe the purpose or validity of this test... its just to see if the headphones "click" well with me i guess...

The Killers - This River Is Wild
Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
Arcade Fire - No Cars Go
Wild Light - Heart Attack
Radiohead - Idioteque
Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (Live)
+ more i can't think of off the top of my head

Kool and the Gang - Celebration

The most obvious choice, such high quality it tests everything!

But in all seriousness, a little bit of every type of music I listen to ranging from lighter rock, to punk, to hard rock, progressive, metal, acoustic, electronic, and finally the 2 rap songs I listen to.

I like to listen to these specifically:

Jack's Mannequin - Swim
Matt Skiba - Good ****ing Bye
Matt Nathanson - Pretty The World
Rise Against - To Them These Streets Belong (and a bunch of others)
Breaking Benjamin - Diary of Jane
Pendulum - Blood Sugar
Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind
Big L - The Enemy

- most of Jeff Buckley "Grace" and Gomez "How We Operate", for well-engineered pop/rock;
- most of Muse "The Resistance", for all the busy-ness thrown at the ear;
- some Jesse Cook and Loreena McKennitt, for the variety of world instruments, drums, and deep bass extension.

Glenn Gould's Goldberg variations ('81)

The analoge recording is excellent, if the magic is there it's a keeper, if not, no use in trying other music, the HF will have to go..
