Windows 7 help needed

I've been having a massive Win7 headache lately, and I cannot figure out what to do for the life of me.

I've been trying to install Home Premium on my Dell Mini 9 (I have a legit copy). I installed it once, and it seemed to run smoothly until I tried to use Windows Update. It stalled on start up every single time I tried to boot. So I reformatted my flash drive and reinstalled, and now I cannot open ANYTHING that uses explorer.exe. I cannot open Computer/Control Panel/Devices and Printer/etcetc

When I try to open those, it gives me one or two error messages:

The first: Explorer.EXE Windows cannot access the specificed device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

The second (less often): ::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683} Windows cannot access the specificed device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Obviously, not being able to use any of that has essentially crippled my computer. Does anyone have any ideas on what's going on? Should I try a third installation? Should I give up hope and go back to Ubuntu (which had its own myriad of problems, but at least I could use it)? I used the Beta and RC flawlessly on this laptop before, but it would figure that once I buy a retail version it all stops working.

My situation is rather urgent, as I need a stable installation before I leave overseas for three weeks.

Thanks guys
Paul

(If this belongs in Gear-Fi, my apologies, I'm not always sure which topics belong where)

You mentioned "flash drive" I have heard that some of these drives will stutter and some are not compatible with Win 7 64 bit. Good luck with your problem

This is 32-bit, since this model of the Atom isn't 64-bit capable. My hard drive doesn't have sufficient space for OS X / OS X is not my preferred operating system.

I'm trying to reinstall for the third time... if this doesn't work I'll probably just go back to the semi-functional Ubuntu.

The third installation seems to work. Some things I will just never understand.

Great to hear! I've had a few bad Windows 7 installs give similar errors- you're not alone.

If you ever have stuttering issues this thread may be of help.

Don't let the above worry you. Once Windows 7 is properly installed and the impossible-to-find LMHOSTS issue is fixed it's a solid OS.
