Agreed I think the S9 had the ability to sound better because of the EQ. But if I turned the EQ off on my S9 and off on the Zune HD, the Zune sounded better.

It was a tough choice for me, but I chose the Zune HD because of the UI and HD radio tuner. I don't doubt at all that the S9 probably has a slight SQ edge, but for the purpose the ZHD serves for me (car, very low volume music while studying) it works very well.

Nobody mentions that the S9 has a recordable radio

I did not know that the S9 had a radio that you could record at 258 bits. This is a major plus that i know the ipod does not have. The stations come in crystal clear and recording sounds better than the radio after recorded. The UI is not as bad as everyone say maybe i am a little more user friendly. I am glad i sold my ipod .... this sounds alot better ....ipod had mediocre sound.

It sounds better than the transmission you're recording? Please forgive my skepticism, I'm sure there's a perfectly rational explanation and I'm just dying to hear it...
