Unamped -> mid-range headphones on ipods

hey there head-fi :]

So, recently I've been pondering over a new set of headphones.
after a year or so with $40 cheap buds, I decided to get a pair of new headphones.

~ Not entirely sure what to get, ESW9, have a crack at $200 IE8 ..?
-prog/vocal-[occasionally more clubby] trance genre [ budget <$200 ]

~ I currently have access to both a 4G iPod Nano and a 3GS iTouch. I am a frequent user of the nano, for it's size and weight, as i'm usually out and about. Does the iTouch have a noticeable SQ difference?

thanks.

p.s. I'm 16, if it means anything. Although I don't like it, teens are very judgemental and I don't want to carry around huge chunky cans.
thanks again for your time.

The touch has more power - that is certain. It will put out more volume, and for some headphones, better dynamics than the Nano, but for sensitive earphones, both are quite good. I've not had time to compare them back to back.

I am an ASOT fan and love Buuren, Dyke, Schulz and a host of others. It really depends on what sound you want: the HD25 are somewhat dark in comparison to great over-the-ear portables like Audio Technica ES7 and 9 and the new extreme bass series.

I also don't like to carry around clunky headphones - they look bad, feel bad and are hard to store. I'm 30. If you are going to get full size phones, you will likely need more voltage and the touch supplies that over the nano.

Thanks for the quick extended response; I guess I won't know the real difference until i pick and test my headphones.
I'd prefer the HD25 over the ES7 for it's apparent isolation and SQ capabilities, haven't heard much about the EW9/ESW9 though except they don't isolate well too. what is this new bass series ?

oh, and ASOT is <3

Not entirely on subject, but I listen to quite a bit of trance (PVD, Armin, Above & Beyond, Tiesto up through ISOS 4), and my simple iPod Classic (Sept' 2009)>ATH-ESW9 setup sounds terrific, IMO...

edit:
i'm really not sure what to get.

):

HD25 = too dark [?]
IE8 = affordable ones all smell fake ..
esw9 probably ?

maybe I should get a cheaper one.

Yea I would say to look at the IE8s if you want to take a chance (although there is a thread around here with detailed pictures and descriptions to tell if they are fake or not).

OR I would say to get the Triple.Fi 10s... I have them and love them. Pretty neutral with nice, punchy bass and a clean treble.
