Music Streamer II, Asus Essence or Dacmagic

Hi everyone

I been reading about this equipment as much as I can.

Let me tell what my purpose is.
I have a full blown Linn system in my living room, but at my home office that I work many hours a day in I like to have good sound in headphones to be able to work and listen to music on.

I have borrowed:

Pro-Ject Head Box
Rega Headphone Amp
Grado sr125i
Music Streamer II
And actually many other headphones but I liked the Grado so I have already ordered this one.

Now my music will come from my computer and the Music Streamer II is sounding really good with the Pro-Ject Head Box.

I did not like the Rega as I felt it made the music very flat. You can hear some more information maybe but its just to flat and non musical to my ears.

Now I have no way I can borrow the Dacmagic or the Asus Essence.
Also if I go with the Asus Essence I still will be going for the Pro-Ject Head Box or Pro-Ject Head Box II SE. So the internal headphone amp is not very interesting in that unit to me.

Then I hear alot of good things about the Dacmagic in this forum and other places.

What's not making any sense to me is how can a re-sampling DAC be regarded as a good thing? I have always thought that the original Sound should be output-et at its original quality. Now don't get me wrong if I am wrong in thinking this and someone can explain to me that it is actually the DAC to go with between this 3 I am considering then by all means.

As I said earlier I can't borrow the dacmagic or asus essence, nor can I go anywhere local and listen to them.

So please enlighten me which DAC will probably be the best buy, don't care much about the price on them as they are similar priced, like $100 or so difference.

Best regards,
Kandor

I am not an expert myself, but I have doubts about resampling as well.

I think it might be worth looking at a m2tech hiface to use as a "soundcard". Then input it into a competent DAC (perhaps the Dac Magic). Then maybe a little dot amp?

Thanks for your answer Lordsegan

Now I was lucky enough to be able to borrow a Dacmagic as well.

So I have been A B testing it against the Music Streamer II for about 1.5h now.

And the difference is there. The Dacmagic is more controlled. More musical as well as soft in the sound, but not by loosing details. I like its characteristics very much.
Its not on pair with my Linn Numeric that I run on my main system, but it is good enough for headphone use that I am planning to buy it for.

One thing I noticed with the Dacmagic compared to the Music Streamer II is that the more things happening on the music track the more difficulty the Music Streamer II seems to have it to handle everything in good quality specially in the high notes.

So I will be back in the store tomorrow and buying the dacmagic.

Anyway hope my find is somewhat useful for someone.

Best regards,
Kandor

Are you comparing the DAC Magic against the Standard Music Streamer II or the II+? The II+ would be more in the same league as the DAC Magic and a much fairer comparison.

I just got the Music Streamer II+ this week to use at my cube at work and I love it!
