Hey guys,
Well after trawling here for amp info for a few months, here I am, realising that I don't have a clue about the new iRiver; iMod; Hi-Fi-Man, Zune or whatever new digital music media there are.
For years, one of the things I love about my Sony WM-DC9 walkman is that I can vary the speed at which the cassette plays. Music can sound fractionally faster or slower, revealing different nuances of a singer's voice, or classical music' tempo. I realise it wasn't designed for this; more likely, designed for vocal recording tape playback.
I did upgrade my mini-disc player to a Hi-Md player and found a host of fantastic functions. Of these, one of the best is 'Speed control' where I can play an album 5% or 10% faster than normal, just like my cassette player.
This is where it gets worse for my 80GB video iPod, which is stacked up to the hilt - almost 76GB of Apple Lossless music files.
When I plug my iPod into my Sennheiser HD25 mark IIs, there is no mincing words; the sound is acceptable; but hardly definitive; certainly not warm.
Both Sony cassette walkman and Hi-Md player are warmer and richer; engaging and involving, less shrill and earpiercing and fatiguing at the higher volumes over time. I guess Sony have a tradition of making warm or higher quality end internal amps? I guess it's too much of a coincidence to find myself listening to both and enjoying them far more.
What's your experiences with your cassette and mini-disc players then?
