Loving the Mini-Disc player! The cassette player too...

Hey guys,

Well after trawling here for amp info for a few months, here I am, realising that I don't have a clue about the new iRiver; iMod; Hi-Fi-Man, Zune or whatever new digital music media there are.

For years, one of the things I love about my Sony WM-DC9 walkman is that I can vary the speed at which the cassette plays. Music can sound fractionally faster or slower, revealing different nuances of a singer's voice, or classical music' tempo. I realise it wasn't designed for this; more likely, designed for vocal recording tape playback.

I did upgrade my mini-disc player to a Hi-Md player and found a host of fantastic functions. Of these, one of the best is 'Speed control' where I can play an album 5% or 10% faster than normal, just like my cassette player.

This is where it gets worse for my 80GB video iPod, which is stacked up to the hilt - almost 76GB of Apple Lossless music files.

When I plug my iPod into my Sennheiser HD25 mark IIs, there is no mincing words; the sound is acceptable; but hardly definitive; certainly not warm.

Both Sony cassette walkman and Hi-Md player are warmer and richer; engaging and involving, less shrill and earpiercing and fatiguing at the higher volumes over time. I guess Sony have a tradition of making warm or higher quality end internal amps? I guess it's too much of a coincidence to find myself listening to both and enjoying them far more.

What's your experiences with your cassette and mini-disc players then?

Ah yes, cassettes.

The FUN part of that was experimenting with the right brand to get the right sound.

I bought my FIRST cassette walkman in England in '93 an Aiwa, GREAT SOUND, BUT with cassette tapes, you would get 'print through' as they aged.

'Print through' .... ahhhh! Is that what it is?!!

I always thought that was because the previous recording wasn't completely rubbed off

It is a great sound isn't it? It's not as shrill and tinny as digital music. Speed enhancement to find the right sound on TDK SA90 tapes (the goal standard for teenagers!) was great. I had a few Aiwas before settling on Sonys. My Sony is still going strong!

This is the one I use most - far right (mirror chrome):

And now for the iPOD vs Cassette Walkman Litmus test

iPod vs. The REAL Walkman

Print through occurs when tapes are stored for a long time andthe sound of the music bleed into adjacent layers of tape. At its worst, you can get echoes before and after.

Never noticed it happening, but maybe that's the SA90s for you!

Yeah - that's what I use!

Found a shop that sells the 90min SA90 tapes for £0.79 each.

Gotta love this tank of a machine. Still going strong.
