SSMH 19j6 to 12A_7 help!

Hey guys,

Apart from the R2 and R8 resistor changes in the SSMH, I've read that a socket adaptor is required. Is there anywhere I can grab one of these adaptors? Or maybe have someone build them for me?

Cheers

It's not a socket adapter - it's 9-pin socket instead of a 7-pin socket, and the wiring to the pins has to change accordingly.

Please post this in the SSMH thread, where user "the_equalizer" will see it. He's the expert on the 12AU7-version of the SSMH.

Hmm so the entire socket has to be changed? I swear I heard of an adaptor for it somewhere! Oh well, posting in the SSMH thread now then, thankyou

Start reading on Page 302 and continue onto the next page. The basic idea is you could make a DIY adapter or buy a custom-made one.

Of course, an adapter isn't necessary if you're building from scratch without a PCB - just build it with the 9-pin socket. If you have the kit with PCB, there's no reason to cannibalize the amp unless one of your 19J6 tubes dies and you can't find a replacement.

Beyond that, I'd suggest posting in the SSMH thread as TomB suggested; you'll get more attention there.

I'll be getting a premade amp with the 19j6 tubes, I've contacted the_equalizer about it, waiting for his reply. Thinking I can just desolder the sockets and attach new ones instead. Thanks!

two things to note, if its a p2p premade it will probably be easier to redo the pins.. not sure but I would reckon so.
second, if it is p2p, make sure you check which schematic was used, the original or the modified. If you're getting one from whiplash it will be the PCB.

Do it all yourself is my advice..great fun I just finished building 12AU7 P2P and its amazing and regardless of how good it sounds..when I first turned it on and played the music I thought bah its not gonna work..and lo and behold bam it works - the smile on my face because I'd made something, albeit simple in relative terms, that works and sounds this good, was massive.

timmy, it is a PCB premade so that will hurt a little! the_equalizer has suggested that I either remove the sockets and wire the new sockets to the PCB as the configurations are different or make an adaptor. It'll have to be the wired version as I'm not confident enough to make a safe adaptor.

I'll be starting with an AlienDAC kit or maybe a Bantam first off. I've got minimal experience with electronics (made a cable earlier, with dodgy local Jaycar parts) so the SSMH will be a side project until I'm more proficient. Thanks for the inspiration!

Ooh - the Alien and Bantam are both SMD. I highly recommend that if all you've done is a cable, build a CMoy or something similar before you start in on one of those. A TREAD might be a good choice if you need a power supply for something.

Agreed - the SSMH is a lot easier than the Bantam because it's through-hole instead of SMD. If you really think you should jump into the deep-end (not starting with the cMoy), go with the SSMH before the Bantam.

I didn't realise that SMD was more difficult. Looks like it'll be the cMoy then for now, thanks for the advice!
