You're only doing the scammer a favour by keeping the name in secret. A lot of damage can be done within hours... no lie.
While I agree with you to a degree, unless it's a proven scam, the name should be withheld. No-one here would want their name tarnished if it weren't true. People need to be careful with whom they deal. If it does turn out to be true, then his/her name should be posted. Until then, I don't want to see a witch hunt.

This is an old forum trick -- people used to scam members on a forum I ran, even after the For Sale forum was locked down somewhat, by targeting WTBs. Since it's done by PM, nobody is any the wiser until money is lost.

Got a question, if you get scamed, what can you do, is it possible to go back to paypal for exemple to get your money back? or is it lost for good. i know that if you have a problem with a money order for exemple, the bank can revers it. but i do not know about other sorts of payement.

If you paid through PayPal with a credit card just call up your bank and ask for a chargeback. I wouldn't bother with a PayPal dispute if I just got scammed.

^ Paypal reps are pretty awesome. I got scammed recently by a guy who set up my payment as a hidden subscription. I paid once thinking that was it, then exactly a month later i was auto charged, I did not have enough funds in my paypal to cover the cost so it was AUTOMATICALLY deducted from my bank account causing massive fees.

paypal needs to step up and make sure nothing it automatic, and that if you want it to be you should have the option to toggle it. Not just take it out from a BANK ACCOUNT because i dont have enough in paypal for it. I called the paypal agent up and he removed the subscription, the person didnt reply to a dispute after 20 days. I escalated it and called the support again, 2 days later i got my money back from paypal

you got lucky, paypal reps/customer service is usually pretty horrible.

Yes, I've been cheated a few times on ebay, luckily smaller amounts usually and paypal were no help at all. They didn't even bother getting back to me for the two smaller amounts and the other, around $80 they just said the person had shut their account and disappeared as far as they were concerned (this was a power seller with thousands of sales) so I was out of luck as they couldn't get the money back from the seller.
I did leave it until my time had nearly run out as the seller was in the US and I was in the UK so I allowed time for slow shipping.

Being scammed myself not too long ago I too would like their name published first to protect our members. My situation involved someone who was a member for years but decided to get some "extra funds" for the holiday season.

Follow the common sense rules and you'll be fine. If you've had any visible contact with the seller, mbriant will have contacted you, or at least he contacted me. This guy came across as a bit suspicious when I looked at his profile and previous posts, so just watch for anything that could be amiss and it'll be a bit obvious if it's this scammer.

Well I imagine most of you are a bit younger than I am, I retired as a Special Agent in the FBI about 10 years ago, but I can relate that most who are scammed usually fall into two categories.

Victims usually ask to be had, so to speak. They try to get a great deal, something for an unusually low price. Often they are not as careful on the net as they would be face to face. They forget that there will always be another "XXXX" gismo offered for sale and that they shouldn't cave into pressure tactics from a seller or imposed internally from their extreme desire to own the latest whatever.

As to revealing the name of the supposed miscreant, that's always a tough one. How long is enough time to ensure that a mistake hasn't been made. Do you wait a bit longer before branding someone a criminal before his or her peers?

Glad I don't have to make that call. Who do you protect, the accused or the many he or she might hurt if they are not informed of his or her identity? Welcome to the real world folks!

Cheers.

since it seems to "wtb" ads that are targeted, one could always just not buy anything if one finds themself in that target demographic. if the deal is legit, it'll be there after this is all sorted out ...far less inconvenient than being a victim.

I received a PM for one of my FS threads from someone who just joined w/zero posts and requesting that I ship internationally even tho I made it clear conUS. I don't know if person was actually legit or not, but I just didn't feel comfortable going thru it. Seeing this thread, I'm glad I trusted my gut instinct

just curious, has anyone actually been scammed yet?

You're safe from what I can see, if the scammer posted saying that you were PM'd. If not, I don't know, but they seemed to stay out of the headphone FS forum and posted in the amp/source forums mostly.

This scammer has posts, so it's likely not them (at least not under the same name)
