Am I the only one that thought 'That must be a freaking huge tsunami to hit Russia...'?

Russia is just as likely to be hit as many of the other countries listed. Like Japan, China, Indonesia, Philippines, ...

Just look at the map -> Google Maps - Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

tsunami alert and evacuation going on in Hawaii right now..water level is receding and 1st wave is predicted to hit soon or has already been hit.
Yup, water is now receding out of Hilo Bay. Rocks and reefs that are normally submerged are now exposed. First surge has arrived in Hilo, there is more to follow. Water is also currently receding on the East shores of Honolulu. Water has again begun to reced out of Hilo Bay but now at a faster pace than previously. It continues the reced at a faster pace each time creating a white water rapids effect in the ocean.

So far no real destructive wave action has hit our shores which is good news. Just continuous receding of water levels followed by incoming surges every 20 min or so.

A few small tsunami's have hit various coasts of New Zealand, but I don't think anything has come ashore yet. We are advised to stay off beaches.

Put on your headphones and hope for the best!!!

I dont think the tsunami has caused much damage yet. Waiting for further reports.

I think its too soon to assess the damage from this quake. 8.8 and it has lasted for 3 to 4 minuts!

I'm amazed at the power of earthquakes, especially megathrust ones, like the boxing day earthquake that caused that devastating tsunami. here is a bit from natural resources Canada FAQ page on megathrust earthquakes reaching up to 9 in Richter scale:

Q. If we have lots of little earthquakes will they relieve the stress building up for a megathrust earthquake?

A. No. It takes many, many small earthquakes to release the amount of energy equivalent to a large earthquake. The amount of energy released increases about 40 times every time there is an increase of one unit on the magnitude scale. Thus, if we consider a small earthquake at the felt level, about magnitude 2, there would have to be 40x40x40x40x40x40x40 of these earthquakes to release the amount of energy as one magnitude 9 event. That is about one million small earthquakes a day, every day, for 500 years. That level of earthquake activity is not observed.

I am Chilean. I was home alone when the quake started and I was listening to some tunes in my laptop via my relatively new and unmodded AKG K518LE's when my bed that has wheels started to move and I heard Cristal breaking after quickly removing the headphones and stood up only when the rumble stopped . I remember myself telling my mind to relax and counting the time for I wanted the quake to stop (minutes became like hours and seconds like them). I became reasonably scared but would not go downstairs. Phones ceased to work for more than 8 hours and the only connection I had with reality was the radio I head inside the car. Obviously a blackout and a secondary and minor quake followed so things went even bleaker. We heard in the radio than some people assaulted supermarkets and I thought to myself about how different people reacted in Japan. I felt ashamed .
