Help me improve my signal chain - Page 2

Just spent like 2 hours going through y1 and y2 parts lists and sourcing parts.

With current stock levels, it's unfortunately necessary to go through 4 vendors for full configuration (Mouser, Digikey for most things; AMB store; Newark for enclosure). Cannot find the specified opamp (either option) ANYwhere; I'll have to check on substitutions.

Even with 4 shipping charges, the total comes out to around $250 (that's including the fancy endplates from AMB). Not bad! I am thinking seriously about doing this. We'll see how I feel once that tax return actually arrives. Thanks, everyone.

And also, using the 1212m's digital output(s) for the y2 would probably be better than using USB, right? So my trusty 1212m would still serve some good purpose (which is always a plus).
YGPM about the price.

Yep. You could use the 1212m S/PDIF out if you wanted. Whether it's better than USB is a good question.

While AD8656ARZ and OPA2365AID are out of stock at Mouser/Digikey/Newark, Digikey shows that they are restocking AD8656ARZ in just a few days (3/3/2010). Mouser has some OPA2365AID coming in in early April, and you can buy from Newark's Farnell-UK direct-ship and receive them in 7 business days (a flat service fee of $20 applies, look at their part number 61M8029).

Don't substitute these opamps with others unless you know what you're doing. In this application there are some very stringent requirements wrt. rail-to-rail swing capability, very low noise characteristics and other factors.

Thanks amb...can you tell me, in this application do the "stereotypical" characteristics of BB and AD hold true - BB being warmer and softer, AD being snappier and more detailed?

I would be using Silmic II caps, which are fairly warm-sounding, so my instinct is that AD might be a better choice to keep things from getting *too* far from neutral. Which is good, if they will be in stock soon.

No. In fact I don't believe in that "house sound" theory. Yes, there are a few AD and BB opamps that do tend to that trait, perhaps because that small subset of opamps happens to be popular around these circles perpetrates that notion. But as a whole, no. In fact most of their opamp lineups were not designed specifically for audio. Some just happen to work well in these applications, and to say that the engineers at the respective manufacturers designed the chips to "sound" a certain way is really quite a stretch.
