Nano 3G vs. Classic SQ?

Is it just me, or does the 3G Nano have a cleaner sound quality compared to the Classic from a few years ago?

I've not done a direct comparison, as I've got all my favs loaded onto the Classic and have just recently started using the 3G Nano to load my most recent purchases. I guess I should have just done the comparison myself, but this thought (potential better SQ of Nano) just came to me this morning.

So I thought I'd check in with all the experts out there.

Any thoughts?

As I thought, I find the 3G Nano to have an airier and more clear sound compared to the Classic. The air and sparkle within the headstage is truncated to the point that it almost sounds dull in comparison.

Another thing I noticed: The 3G Nano has the left/right reversed. I guess I'll have to remember to swap my IEMs around whenever I listen to it.

left/right reversed???? I found the Nano 4 Gen to be far superior to the current generation. The sound from what I remember of the 3 Gen was a little better than the current models. I think today the are too sophisticated versus back then when it just spewed a nice uncomplicated sound. Now they are too over engineered. This is just from memory of course. I have nothing to back this up.

Clearly, I'm in need of meds.

When I did the comparison this morning, I left the IEMs in place and just swapped back and forth between the Nano and Classic. Makes sense. And I noticed in one particular song that the musical parts were backwards (left/right).

At the conclusion of this short comparison, I took off the IEMs and typed that little blurb. A bit later I put the IEMs on again, but swapped the L/R, and listened to the same exact tune. It was backwards again. The L/R were coming out of opposite channels.

Then I thought, "Oh, s**t, the Classic is backwards." Switched to the Classic, same thing.

I don't know how to explain it, but now both are playing the tune as it's supposed to be played. I am more than just a bit stumped.

Apparently, I can't tell from left and right. Maybe I should change my hobby from music to reading books. But then, I'll probably complain that the story sucks and doesn't make sense as I try and read the book upside down.

Strange.

I don't understand how you mean it's backwards. How do you take an IEM and switch sides.

You lost me somewhere.

Well, the iPod nano 3g is a wolfson dac and the classic[metal face] is a cirrus logic dac. So they ought to sound substantially different. The iPods that are iModded are wolfson models. All recent iPods are Cirrus logic.

iPod Classic[6th gen onward], nano 4th gen onward[curved screen], and all touches are cirrus.

older iPods are wolfson for the most part.
