Plenty of good advice here, I have just a little info to add about the Ultrasones to help your decision. They do fold up, but the headband itself is pretty wide so they don't get as compact as some other brands. Folded the HFI-780s make a crescent shape that would fit nicely in a 5"x7"x3.5" space (the size of a small stack of DVD cases). You can also lay the earpieces flat instead of folding them up, making them approx. 8"x7"x2". The PRO 750s have bigger earpieces but also have a detachable cord where the HFIs do not. As for comfort, if you have normal to small ears the HFI-780 should be fine, larger ears will fit better in the PRO 750.

As for sound, you can find plenty of praise for either one, and apparently the HFI-780 modded by ALO comes close to the sound of the $1500 E9. Whether you will prefer the Ultrasone sound to the other recommendations is unknown until you compare them yourself, but I find the S-Logic technology does a great job of making the music seem to surround you (unless you're one of the minority it doesn't work on). My DJ1s work great with low power sources, and although the HFI-780 has a bit higher impedance I would expect it to be similar (the PRO 750's is higher still).

I can find the Ultrasone HFI 780 <$200, the ultrasone pro 750 for <$250, and the denon d2000 <$300. I guess what i should now be asking is that if i were to get one of these, is there a portable amp (ibasso T3 size ie. pocket size) that would be able to drive the headphones for less than $120? Would the T3 even work or is there something even better than them?

what is the best ultra portable amp i would need if i bough one of these headphones? Im still hoping to have one quite cheap (under 120-130 if not better). A used amp would work as well if i could find a good one for a good price.

Would a portable amp around $150 work well with either the denon d2000 or the ultrasones

If the D2000 are anything like the D5000, they honestly sound better out an ipod & portable amp than all my other headphones (Grado SR225, Beyer DT770-80, Shure SRH840, AKG K271). (okay not as good as SE530, but those aren't headphones) But they still sound like dog snot bubbles compared to how they sound amped.

Not that I'm recommending them for the OP, because sound quality aside, they are not portable, rugged, isolating, inexpensive etc.

At $300 if you absolutely can't get an amp, forget everything that isn't portable (Senn 280s, Denon D2000s, etc.).

Just pick up the best Audio-Technicas you can find sub-$300. They're the only company I can think of that makes closed on-ears in that price range off the top of my head.

Would a d3 boa be able to power one of them or if not a d3 python?
