Monster Turbine vs. Klipsch S4 .... or.... NuForce Ne6?He

Hey guys, first post here.

right ear on the px100 died, due to budget issues i just ran out and got a pair of $10 skullcandies. music has not been the same to me ever since..... and that needs to change now.

After a month of lurking, I think I've decided that what I want is a

1. sub $100
2. in ear
3. good sound stage
4. good bass

I definitely have the music selection for bass, but I listen to enough rock and vocal that I can't have a muffled mid-range.

So far the I'm learning towards the turbines, but I do like my friend's NE6 (minus the midrange... it's OK? i guess?). I wasn't terribly impressed with the S4, but I wasn't listening in ideal conditions either. I haven't heard the turbines.

What do yall think? I'm open to other suggestions as well
I'd especially love to hear from people who have heard more than one of the models I mentioned.

Oh one more point of discussion/question. Turbines will run me more than twice as much as the NE6. Worth it?

PS anyone else here on superfuture? i was taken aback by how nice people are on here by comparison

oh and if you're going to suggest on-ears, keep in mind that i have a big head. so no 280 or k81dj for me :\ and they must be portable. i have a 2g touch.

If you're open to headphones, Audio Technica ATH-M50s sound like they would suit. $90 on eBay, punchy bass, decent soundstage and they're collapsible making them relatively portable.

As for the IEMs you've mentioned, I've only tried the NuForces and thought they were pretty decent for the price but they sound congested compared to my PL-50s.

I have NE-7M's (NE-6 with mic), have given Hippo VB's a good try (100 hrs burn-in), and will soon have M11Ps for comparison.

My music is mostly classic rock, moderate country (Lyle Lovett, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Alison Krauss), female vocals (k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, Brandi Carlile), and anything Mark Knopfler has done (rock, Cajun, Irish folk most recently).

The Hippo VB's, reviewed by ClieOS here would certainly fit your criteria. They use a selection of bass plates to tune that range to your preference. They definitely have "good bass" (with 'two dot' medium plates) along with nice detail and excellent soundstage, but compared to the NE-7M, I found the bass a little too prominent, like Bonnie Raitt's bass player was in front on stage. I tried the 'three dot' (lowest bass) plates and thought that left them sounding 'thin', and a mix of those plates was better, but the vocals were slightly veiled compared to NuForce's. I never noticed the 'harsh treble and sibilance' that others mention with VB, but my old ears may be more forgiving in that dimension. BTW, both were used with Shure E2c silicone tips.

So overall, the NE-7Ms gave a nicer balance for me but there was nothing wrong with those VB's for a different set of priorities.

Here's a comparison between NE-7M and S4i that resulted in favoring the NuForce.
