Itunes - setup question

Hi

Not happy with the quality of the rips I'm getting with Itunes. Got a Mac mini 1.83 running tiger (not got round to upgrading yet), with a 1 tb usb hard drive.

Basically sounds like distortion on some bass heavy parts of songs (not so much the plucked bass but the heavier type). So was wondering what I was doing wrong? I have it set to alac with the setting to automatic. The Use error correction is also ticked.

So why do half the rips sound crap?

Mp3 player is an ipod touch 2nd gen, with senns cx300 (though I've noticed the distortion on senn 550 and klipsch x1).

Cheers

My guess would be that it's in the music.

I'd try ripping with Max instead to see. Max from sbooth.org
Max's error correction is much better than iTunes.

This really sounds like a loudness war type of thing... All the current music I listen too is so loud it clips, especially on bass.. Older albums however sound much nicer.

Yeah, it's unlikely that a bad rip would cause distortion like that. Like those guys ^^ said, it's probably in the original recording.

Seems like you are another victim of the Loudness race.

It also might be EQ. Sometimes those "Bass Boost" settings are enough to push the signal into clipping.

Can you re rip one of those cds with EAC and compare that with the itunes rip? That will determine if itunes is to blame.
