5.1 Cinema surround system reccomendations (UK)

hi, my mother has got it into her head she wants a 5.1 setup and god help me im ready to hit her.

she would need both the speakers and amp for them, ideally something all in one but with at least a few input (sky box, video recorder, dvd / bd player, ps3 maybe, laptop at times too maybe)

there is no set budget but nothing too high, she wont appreciate anything great and isnt likely to want to go more than a few hundred £. to her she wont see great benefit in doing so. say maybe a top limit of about £500, lower is preferable.

please please help people as i swear if have to go round comet again with her im going to have to bludgeon her to death with her own arm

Will she be able to hear the difference between a mediocre or a good system? If not, then go with one that is in the middle of her budget and looks good, make the right appreciative placebo-effect-inducing noises when you set it up for her and give it a listen, and she'll be happy.

If she is somebody who will hear the difference, then that's a different matter.

If you don't think she'll hear the difference, get a home-theater-in-a-box kit.

The budget is pretty limiting, if you wanted something really good. Maybe troll around for some used canton satellites & sub, and an onkyo or denon receiver from a year or two back.

oh im sure she wont hear the difference but id rather she got something moderately decent rather than some of the crap shes been looking at.

its just im not familiar enough with speakers and amps to really say what to get with any real authority.

Well, in HT receivers these days it's hard to go wrong with Onkyo or Denon. Possibly Yamaha as well.

The problem with HTIAB is that the speakers are going to be sub-par guaranteed. Good speakers still cost real money.

Poking around a bit, 5.1 speaker kits from reputable entry-level speaker makers (canton, paradigm, etc) start at about $600usd. Which is more by itself than most HTIAB kits.

Its really hard to beat this one Acoustic Energy AEGO T 5.1 Speaker System | 5.1 Speaker Systems | HiFi 4 Less
An good receiver is more important, imo. Most all in one products are not that good, especially cheap one, they look shiny, but sound like ****.

I still own their previous AEGO 2 aego 2 : acoustic energy , sounds great. And because you are UK based you should find enough places where you can audition them.
