Sony MDR-SA5000 or Denon AH-D2000

I am leaning towards the Sony's sa5000 because I can buy it for only 300$ and it retails for 650$ but how does it compare to the ah-d2000? I also prefer open headphones because they are more airier and have a wider soundstage. I will be using it with my new Denon DRA-CX3 amplifier that I inherited from my dad

I also prefer neutral sounding headphones because I listen to almost every genre and I can always equalize it. Thanks!

The D2000s are not neutral to my ears. They like to go boom boom. The soundstage is pretty damn good for a closed phone but the mids aren't as forward as I like them to be.

Haven't heard the Sonys so I can't comment on them.

So either extremely painful high (even worse than stat and Ultrasones) or rather boomy bass. I'd choose boomy bass because at least it still allows you to listen stuffs. But again, it is up to you.

If you are ok with EQ, you may EQ out SA5000 which makes these crappy Sony into much better one.

I find the MDR-SA5000 a great can for rock and everything speedy. I've only heard it shortly but it was lightning fast and responsive. Enjoyable, alive and dynamic, and not at the expense of clarity or detail. A lovely headphone to be sure.

D2000 is quite another animal. Darker, still quite fast, but almost seems sloppy in comparison with the Sonys. More bass - not necessarily better og tighter bass, but definitely more.

If isolation is not a factor my advise is the SA5000.

Similar decision here, hope you don't mind me tagging on. Because I don't have beamthegreat's great Denon source, I'm also factoring in the D5000; currently I'll use it with the NuForce Icon's amp but I'm having something beefier by the summer.
