What Should I do with My SinglePower MPX3-12SN7

Hi all,

It's been a long time since I graced the pages of Head-Fi or done headphone listening. I am reading a lot of negative posts regarding SinglePower and potential negative impact.

My question/concern is before I fire up my SinglePower MPX3-12SN7 should I take it to a qualified service shop to have it checked out or put it up for sale with the sticky links regarding the concerns?

Thanks

spend some time reading the threads. I wouldn't rush to sell it. getting it checked out is a good idea. if it's ok, it is a wonderful amp.

If I were in your shoes, I would discontinue using the amp until I got it checked out by a qualified professional. Unless you can check it out yourself, you shouldn't take any chances.

Thanks for the replies!

Now I have to do a search for a qualified professional in the New York City area.

Any recommendations?

Many have put hi rez pics on the trouble threads and a few qualified members can look it over. Of note are the undersized transformers, heated diodes, no bleeder resistors on the caps, poor technical assembly, underspec'ed switches, etc. It's a crap shoot as to what you have. Some are in good shape, many are suspect and some have been flat out junk.

Try finding a tech through a music shop if no luck here. Guitar players use tube amps and have to get them serviced.

I would have your unit checked, from the pictures I did not see bleeder resistors across the caps. The good thing is I did no see your board scorched as some were (mine included). Go to the two threads at the top and look for someone like Bolder to look at your amp. Good luck.

Please make sure that you do not touch anything inside that case, doing so may result in death.

No bleeding resistors between the 2 big caps, at least there is a leveling one.

It would be good to find out voltage across those monster caps and make sure that the low voltage diode bridge isn't being pushed beyond its limits (what tubes are you using?).

Be sure to have it looked at before use.

Aside from guitar shops (they all know tube techs), contact your local amateur radio clubs. There are several near you. All of them will be able to put you in touch with someone who works on tubes. Amps are much simpler than radios, so any radio tech will be able to handle it.

I emailed Wayne at The BOLDER Cable Company and I will be shipping out the unit tomorrow for an evaluation.

Hoping for the best!
