Sony D-777 batteries

I know the D-777 is supposed to use the NH-9WM gumsticks, but does anyone know if it can use NH-14WM as well? I can't find the NH-9WM's anywhere.

I tried to email Sony, but they just gave me this rather half-assed one-line reply:

"We can only recommend that the NH-9WM be used with the D-777"

Pat, that's because the NH-9WM and the NH-14WM gumsticks are completely different sizes. A NH-14WM battery won't fit a PCDP designed for the NH-9WM - nor does the NH-9WM battery fit one that's designed for the NH-14WM.

If you can't find the NH-9WM's anywhere, you'll have to special-order them directly from Sony's parts department (the price that you'll pay for the NH-9WM's will likely be on the high side).

Thanks.

*sigh*

Pat,
I have the D-777 and the NH-14WM gumsticks fit them just fine. D777 can even charge these battery. Go ahead and order them, you will be more please with a longer hours of use. Moreover, they are indentical in size.

My bad for the NH-9WM and the NH-14WM being different sizes. The problem with the D777's charging system is that it doesn't fully charge the NH-14WM batteries, so that the battery life between charges from the D777/NH-14WM combination is barely any longer than from the D777/NH-9WM combination. In other words, you are deliberately undercharging those NH-14WMs when you charge them inside the D-777. (BTW, I have read in another thread that the chargers built into PCDPs have rudimentary charging controls - fixed charging current with a timer - and the D777's built-in charger delivers just enough current/time combination to fully charge the NH-9WM's, with allowance for a very slight overcharge.)

OTOH, you don't want to use the NH-9WM batteries inside the newer D-EJ825, D-EJ915, D-EJ925 or D-EJ01 PCDPs, because their charging systems will repeatedly - and severely - overcharge those NH-9WMs. As a result, you must use the NH-14WMs in those newer gumstick-battery-powered Sonys.

Eagle,
I never compared them myself...so I think I'll have to compare them some day and tell you guys a result. But, i really think the 9wm is very difficult to find by now.

Thanks guys,

As long as the NH-14WM are comparable to the NH-9WM then it's all good.

So go ahead and buy them. I think they will work well for you. Why don't you buy a separate charger....? So you can reveal a full potential of the MH-14.

My 14WM batteries work fine in my D777... with one exception...

The unit appears to charge a little TOO quickly... done in 45 minutes from flat (even the little 9's took longer than that)... So, I just charge them 2 or 3 times, and the little babies go on forever

Eagle Driver... You said...

I would strongly DISAGREE with this... as my D-EJ825 was only supplied with 600mah Nicads!!

If the worst comes to the worst, i'll just charge the batteries with my MD player (which came with a 14WM)... but, as i said above, apart from the petty charging problem, no real trouble at this end

Duncan, the D-EJ825's built-in charger is smart enough to detect the presence of NiCd or NiMH batteries, and the older NH-9WM's (which are 900mAH NiMH batteries) will be detected as "NiMH", and will charge at the 1400mAH rate! That will overcharge those older NiMH's!
