What is the LOUDEST most BRICKWALLED CD you own?

To my ears....none of my CDs is as brickwalled as my remastered Raw Poser by Iggy and the Stooges.

A few of the songs appear to sound brickwalled completely.
I've been talking headphones with you for years. Now I can help you with your purchase:) Sales Specialist & Headphone Guru @ Headphones.com

Hmm. Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul? Or a White Stripes one. I don't know if they brickwall or it just sounds like it because of analog recording.

Other possibilities are Jimi Hendrix remasters. When I ripped them VBR every song was at or above 290kbps, which is a quick way to see how much silence is in a song. I don't know if you could consider The Flaming Lips - Embryonic brickwalled since they meant it to be.

R.E.M's last. Too bad, cause somewhere behind the wall is some good music. I think.

Loudest? Probably Metallica - Death Magnetic and Slayer - World Painted Blood. Both have the evil hand of Greg Fidelman behind them.

That would have to be one of the rarely played (but do enjoy when I'm in the mood) selections by Tool or Filter.

In a review of the new High on Fire album, Snakes for the Divine, the NY Times mentions the controversy surrounding Mr. Fidelman's handiwork. it seems that HoF are among the latest to "benefit" from his production skills. (You may have to scroll down a bit to read the review after you hit the link.)

Both of the albums you cite are mentioned in the review as definitive examples of the Fidelman approach to production.

That CD is the poster boy (and I saw it on your poster of 100 covers) for loud and brickwalled. It is really really really loud and clipped. Really digitally clipped. Horrid.

It is however great music (for cover bands). I own that CD. The only reason I keep it is because it is important music. It's difficult to listen to. When I want to listen to Raw Power I go for a vinyl rip rather than the CD.

Here's what Iggy says on the back cover of the CD:
People kept asking me -- musicians, kids I would see, 'Have you ever thought about remixing Raw Power?'" "Everything's still in the red, it's a very violent mix. The proof's in the pudding."

Unfortunately Iggy did that in digital rather than analog. Digital doesn't sound good going into the red. If only someone would have given Iggy an analog mixing board for the remix...

Raw Power is getting a remastered deluxe version release this year (due April 2010). It's supposed to be the David Bowie mix and a live soundboard recording for the bonus material. I wonder if it will be any better... The live material might be an improvement over the studio versions.

Michael Jackson - Dangerous
Mastodon - Crack the Skye and Blood Mountain
Julian Casablancas - Phrazes for the Young (the synths will rip your ear drums out)

yeah but that's the point

Deathconciousness - Have a Nice Life is very loud and is lofi so it has purposeful distortion and clipping.
