would a rwa 5g imod give me a large quality of sound improvement over my ipod touch 3g??

i would not drop the money on it until you have a very nice amp to pair with it. $250 plus the cost of an iPod is pretty steep. You can get a pretty solid amp for that money. And without the amp, the iMod is useless.

You need the special LOD designed for RWA 5 or 5.5 Gen iMods, and a great amp, like the iQube. However the results are spectacular, easily audibly different from a Touch -- I passed a single-blind test no problem.

My 5.5 Gen RWA iMod (filled with lossless files, obviously), ALO cable designed for this, iQube, and ES-7's make a thrilling portable rig that I have had golden ears listen to in A/B comparisons with best-in-the-world home rigs (O2s, HE90s) and the pocket rig does not equal these of course, but lives on the same block, like the samllest house in a rich neighborhood, pretty amazing.

Huge investment, however.

I am in Manhattan all the time for business. If you want to meet at a Starbucks somewhere in midtown, and don't mind being seen with a 61-year-old business man in an old school suit-and-tie, you can listen to my rig and directly compare to your Touch. Just sent a PM.

Probably not large, but should be highly audible.
Of course depending on the LOD and amplifier you pair the iMod up with. Update indeed, but it does come at a price ($$$)

Reading posts like this make me want to switch from IEMs to portables. What can I say; I love the amazing sound I get from my portable rig. Pocket sized heaven that completely isolates me from the outside world. Music is amazing.
