Do batteries sound different??

Okay, I noticed something interesting.

My AAA battery died in my player one day and grabbed a coupke of cheap Panasonic batteries.

I thought, 'am I hearing things?' They sounded totally lifeless as I had been using Ray-o-vacs I had bought at Canadian tire.

On my most recent bus trip to the U.S, the Panasonic battery died and got a couple of American Energizer batteries at Buffalo.

Wow, what a difference. Dynamic, less aggressive and oddly more detailed.

I used to note that when I used rechargeable batteries on my old Kenwood portable, the sound was much improved.

I know I'm a vetran audiophile of 30 years, and it always amazed me as to what little tweeks in my system would do to perk up the system. Never did I expect batteries would do that.

Try it sometime if you haven't and listen carefully to your favourite recordings, you may be surprized!!

The reason the cheap batteries didn't sound right is that they don't hold a correct charge, and underpowered your player. I can't even use those crappy Panasonic batts in my powered toothbrush, as they come out the pack half/arsed.

Yea you want constant, solid power going to your equipment and sometimes the cheap batteries can't deliver. IMO just get some good solid batteries (I use either Duracell or Energizer).

That makes perfect sense.

Now it would be interesting to compare American vs Canadian Energizers, but I'm sure they all come from the same factory in China

The naysayers are late to the party... Tysonic low discharge 9v batteries for high quality portable amps have been a topic of discussion here for a while now.

Okay, so now I have to investigate rechargeable AAA batteries until I upgrade my player.

Yup, why doesn't someone design an 'audiophile' battery this could be interesting!!

I only use batteries plated in platinum.

Be forewarned, some rechargeable batteries (even the Energizer and EverReady ones) don't hold a charge the way they're supposed to. If you do go w/them, get it as a kit that comes w/the charger & batts together. This way they have the best chance of compatibility.

Sounds crazy, but I had issues w/buying 1 brand of battery, and 1 brand of charger - and they were supposed to be cross-compatible. I didn't have any explosions, but my batts weren't charged correctly and died quite fast.
