Samsung S8000 Jet sound quality.. anyone?

I'd just like to know if anyone here has anything to say about the SQ of the Samsung Jet phone (or Omnia HD, for that matter) since I plan on getting one in the future and I've been reading up about it a lot. Nobody mentions anything beyond "good", but I figure that's really not enough for head-fi-ers. I've been using phones as portable source for a few years now, because they're convenient and I'm content with mid-fi for the moment.

So, if anyone has a Jet and some midrange phones, I'd like to hear what they think. Any input is very welcome!

i have one.
dont really like it for listening to music though. the sq is not the best i've heard and the control for music (name artist -> all songs, wich i really hate because of the non-album option) is pretty bad IMO
so i do not think it's your best bet

I find the best place to find out about the music quality on mobile phones is GSMarena.com they test the music output of phones on a number of measures.

illuminati, thank you for your input. Where exactly would you put the SQ? Let's say.. compared to an ipod/other mobile phone (if you ever listened to one). I'm not looking for the best sound out there, but only hope it has decent sound, because I love just about everything about that phone.

i'll have to listen to that then. since i have a song on my ipod classic, my philips mp4 and my phone i'll see where it stands. i'll give the answer later this day

I have the Omnia/i900, which to my knowledge has the same SQ. It's absolutely useless straight out of the box. You can slightly improve it though by installing the SRS WOW plugin for your firmware. This opens up the soundstage and adds some depth. Makes it bearable for watching a video. You can find it over at Modaco.

ok my impressions:

for the test i used zombie nation's track "forza" (LAME 320 Kbps)
i compared my samsung jet to my Philips GoGear Mp4 player and to my Ipod classic 120 gb (don't know wich gen) with my Koss PortaPro 25th anniversary edition as headphones.

Samsung Jet.
first of all: this thing is loud! i had to put the volume down to 2-3 on it.
ok about the sound now = the sound is pretty far away, the music is not in good balance and i've got the feeling the bass presses on your ears and that it's not clear at all, not even with EQ on.
to sum it up= this device just sucks for audio playback on it, there is simply no soundstage at all. for phone only it's great and i love it for all the options but for audio playback it's a big no-no

Philips GoGear. ( all devices written as compared to the jet)
this one is way more detailed unlike the jet, everything is much clearer then it is on the jet. Vocals sounds like they need to and not all crappy like on the jet. the bass is also much better on my philips, effects in the track are all fine and it's all really easy-listening.

Ipod Classic 120 GB.
First of all i'll have to say i've got the treble booster on on my ipod.
the track is really clear and you dont miss a thing in it, the bass is clear (not muddy or something like that.) soundstage is OK (seperation is alright) again, the effects sound fine and so are the focals. The ipod is the most clear-playing device from all.

so the list is like this
1. Ipod
2. Philips (though it's close)
3. Jet

like Negakinu said: it's pretty useless. and i do not think that application will make a big difference in the SQ.

if you have any questions: i'll do my best to answer them.

Thank you again, you've been much help. I guess I should find one and try it out for myself to see just how bad it is.. Too bad, seemed like a great multimedia phone.

Well I also have a Samsung Jet but have found it to be quite a respectable mp3 player.

It must be my age or the type music I listen to, but in direct A/B comparison with my HiFiMan 801 just now, I found that the Samsung sounded quite similar and was not at all embarrassed by the mighty 801.

I was using a pair of Sennheiser HD 650 phones with their foam inserts removed and a short version of the standard lead to listen to acoustic jazz recorded at a live performance by my Sony D50 (piano, bass and drums sort of thing). Oh, and also some studio recorded jazz ripped from a CD. The phone was playing mp3s at 320kb/s and the 801 was playing FLAC.

Sure the HiFiMan sounded slightly better perhaps in every way - if one concentrated very carefully to what one was listening to. But by the time I had unplugged the phones from the Samsung and plugged them into the HiFiMan the SQ seemed to be virtually the same, or at least good enough for some semi-serious listening.

The Jet has a 3.5mm phone socket which is very handy, and will just about drive the (300 Ohm) 650’s but not to ear shattering levels, louder with (35 Ohm) Grado Sr125s and loudest with the supplied (average) ear buds.

So people’s mileage obviously varies, and perhaps one wouldn’t want to use a mobile phone as a serious music source, but I have heard a lot worse than the Samsung Jet.

It also has quite a good camera on it but I am not convinced by all the other bells and whistles…

Well I went ahead and bought the Jet anyway and I must say it's quite good in regards to SQ. I may not be the most critical listener, though, so don't take my word for it. The sound is quite full and balanced and the phone is able to drive my sennheiser HD448 ok, though I still need to push it to the max volume setting on some older, quieter tracks. Overall I find it's quite ok, if anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer them.
Thanks to those who contributed in this thread!

Hi there,

I actually work at Samsung mobile. nobody shoot me

What I can tell you is that Samsung designs its phones with features in mind e.g we have partnered with B&O for our audio. However I can also tell you that not that much emphasis has been put on the audio engineering (e.g we focus on so many things...HD recording, 8 mp camera for instance) and you are better off buying a dedicated audio player if you are an audiophile.

Good thing I'm not an audiophile just yet then I'm quite happy with my Jet for now, as I've never actually listened to anything remotely Hi-Fi. I'm just in it for the good-sounding music.
