Need help in looking for a DAP

Edit: won't be using amp, don't need EQ

Hey Head-Fi, I need your help in looking for a DAP. Sorry if I'm not clear, or contradict myself, or say irrelevant things, I'm still trying to understand all the terminology around here. So much to know!

Ok, so here are my requirements, from most important to least:

- Overall great sound quality (lows/mids/highs are equally great). Very detailed (I want to hear the little things in the music). No roll-off at the ends. None of the lows/mids/highs bleed into each other. Deep, tight, punchy bass and non-harsh, well-extended highs.

- A large soundstage with very precise instrument separation (none of that general left/center/right).

- At least 16 GB of storage

- At least 18 hours of battery life

- FLAC support

- Gapless FLAC

I'll be using a pair of IEMs for listening (though I'm not sure which yet)

Are there any DAPs that meet all these? My budget is $250, though I will have no problem spending more if I need to. Thank you for helping me!

Hmm. Well I was going to say an iPod BUT you wanted FLAC playback.... Rockbox would handle that though and they are good players. But the EQ isn't that good :/

The Cowon D2 is good and has all of those qualifications but has slight bass roll off although I don't know how bad it actually is.

The Sony players have good SQ as well and IMO; I would suggest the s:flo2 BUT it has "horrible" battery life and doesn't have the nicest UI. What are you going to be using as Headphones? Any amps or anything else? Knowing this would help us.

I thought the rockbox EQ was good? That's what I've been hearing here for a while but I dont use EQ on any of my players myself.

the cowon D2 does support flac but it's not gapless unless you rockbox it however I never used mine with rockbox. The bbe settings wasn't bad on them but they did have that bass rolloff which was kinda annoying. you can go up to 48gb on them and battery life is pretty good

Oh yea I meant EQ on a non Rockboxed iPod.
You can only go up to 5.5 I THINK
And the 7th gen Classic sounds the best along with the iPhone 3GS.

Whoops, how'd I miss that . I don't plan on using any amps, and I'll be using IEMs (though I'm not sure which ones yet).

Sansa Fuze should be a nice DAP for the above mentioned.

I recently bought the Cowon D2+ from Newegg.com - COWON D2+ 2.5" Black 16GB MP3 / MP4 Player and let me tell you, I FREAKIN' LOVE IT!

I've own ipods, and some samsungs but the d2+ is it. The SQ is amazing, not the best but definitely well worth the dollars.

I highly recommend it.

I heard the Cowon players were outdone by the Sansas. Would the Fuze/Clip+ offer the best SQ with all my other needs? If so, between them, which sounds better?

The Cowon players are not outdone by the Sansa's. The Cowon lineup has the superiour SQ due to the stellar EQ and vast sound enhancement settings.

On flat EQ the Sansa is the preferred dap (not for me though, as I could never get into the Sansa sound - clip & Fuze included), but use the EQ and all the Sansa daps come tumbling down.
