Yeah - I got my iPod over 4 years ago. I didn't realise there were better things out there other than my mini-disc player.

Till I discovered the Sony MZ-RH1 Hi-Mini-Disc Player

That's what I am saying ; give me that SQ with gapless and I'm sold. Come on Sony, you can do it... Is it THAT hard to program?

Wrong. I like iPods and enjoy them. Like everything else in life, everybody has different tastes and different needs.

They do seem to take on board customer feedback though.

Convenience as a marketing tool, always trumphs Quality. The iPod was a marketing success for Apple. It's far from the last word in quality. Convenience? Yep. Quality - it's bearable. I had more fun with my Sony cassette walkman than an iPod

I don't have any hiss problems with the X and UM3X too.

@ TS: glad you found the sound you want!

Nice. I'm glad you found the sig that you wanted. A lot of times people knock players because they don't like the color of sound that it produces rather than the SQ itself.

Good luck in the future with getting more increase in SQ

Yeah, the reasons I bought an iPod touch over the X series were no gapless and no on-the-go playlists. I purchased an E345, and while it sounds better than my Zune 8 and iPod touch, I don't find it worth enough to use over the touch.

All that's required to getting the Sony sound and gapless is to get a Japanese model. Not that hard.

What about the interface? Japanese only or English too?

I thought everyone buy it because they like steve jobs. LOL.

shigzeo mentioned sony can do a lineout without inheriting the EQ, can that be considered a better lineout than ipod?

^Japanese only but very easy to use as everything is in the same place as the western models. The players also come with a very well-illustrated pdf. manual which show every menu option which makes it easy to copy menu text and drop it in any free on-line Jpn-Eng dictionary.

The relatively new A840 series (I have one of them) is right up there in SQ with the X series as they both share the S-master digital amp.

The wife has an S644 and while not as good sounding as mine, is still a great player.

Shipping through tenso.com and buying off of kakaku.com, you could get the 64GB A847 for just over 30,000 yen

Thanks for the tip. I doubt I could get the hang of the X series by using Japanese (internet browser and all) but the A840 series look like a great alternative, considering SQ.

However, how come the Japanese model have gapless and the US don't? Looks to me then it's simply a firmware difference?

The Jpn models have gapless because in addition to the other encoders like MP3, they have ATRAC capability .

Yeah, but then, if it's anything like my MiniDisc, the mp3s will need to be converted to ATRAC to have gapless, no?

^yup.... the players come with Sonicstage 5 for this but everything is in Japanese. Fortunately, a previous version of Sonicstage in English can be easily and freely downloaded and which supports ATRACT3+ and Advanced lossless.

I rip everything at ATRACT3+ 256 as I can't really hear any difference in SQ when comparing to lossless or WAV.
