Why headphone? Why not stereo speakers?

Since a proper gear for a full size headphone w/ tube amp and DAC has no mobility value at all Im wondering why you guys prefer headphone over bookshelf speakers?

Because you can get the most out of your money? Or because you find the music much more detailed? Or just because you already have $$$ speaker gear?

not everyone has the environment/living conditions suitable for speaker listening.

one day i hope to have a nice magnepan or quad esl setup.

I am like dcpoor and have run into continual problems with fitting speakers around living conditions.

Now I have switched to headfi I have found the ability to switch easily between headphones and different sounds and the small size of the kit are also big advantages.

People give me dirty looks if I bring full-sized speakers on the train.

I still live with my parents(Iˇm starting university this year) so Speakers would be problem.

And, I cant find any speaker which beats my Jh13 for resonable price.

Lol if you bring a full size cans + tube amp + DAC they will give you more dirty look.

I personally find it costs a lot more for speakers gear to give an equilavent sound quality to a nice cans gear. That's why I go for a cheap 5.1 surround sound system (under $700) for movies and casual music listening and saving it up for a nice headphone gear (around $1,000) for more serious music.

Normally peoply find that spending ratio is ridiculous

Actually, one day I was going to listen to some stereo systems, but suddenly my RSS reader have noticed me about great deal on headphones, needless to say I've bought that pair.
At the moment I am stuck with great cans and I really enjoy them.

Seriously speaking: an equally good stereo system would cost a fortune, so in the mean time before getting one, I roll with headphones

Headphones are also more intimate and you can hear details better sometimes, and closed phones block out family noises. Also its nice to be able to bring music with you and have it sound nice. Some people dont have alot of money, and if need be, they can have good sound under $200usd.
Some thing like Grado SR60 / Sansa Fuze.....may cost them $170-180usd and they will have decent sound they can take with them and it doesnt take up much livng space in a small crowded home.

The time when I listen just happens to be around when others hibernate, hence disturbing significant other(s) let alone neighbours is the least of my concerns.

I stopped using speakers because I have to sit right in the center of my setup to hear the proper sound. With headphones, depending on the cable length, I can have a lot of mobility around my room with no loss of audio quality. This has increased my productivity AND allowed me to listen to more music as well.

Headphones trump speakers when it comes to reproducing the smallest of details There is also a feeling of intimacy with the music that cannot be matched by any speaker system, simply by nature of design.

Why headphone? Why not stereo speakers? Why Not Both?

I enjoy both my headfi rigs and my stereo setup Both are mid-fi but good enough for me. My Beresford DAC is used both as a source in my stereo setup and as DAC/AMP combo for my Grado's.

Bus, Train, Late Night Listening, Sounds different than Speakers, another cool Toy to have.
Did I miss anything?

For several reasons:
* Intimacy.
* Sound quality (ex. the weakest micro details).
* Lack of suitable listening room for speakers.
* (Trans)portability.
* Physical size.
* Head-Fi.org
* Flexibility (ex. switching transducer in a matter of seconds).
* . . .

lol sure it would be cool if we have both. I dream of a pair of decent bookshelfs every night but I'm talking about people that money is kinda an issue like me (college student) and have to compromise one thing to get another.

I agreed with sound difference and lower cost
