sound quality and presense of bass notes are primarily the function of the headphones. no particular amp/dap combo will make up deficiencies in your headphones. sure, some have bass boost but eq will take you just so far.

the rule of thumb used to be was to put the money in the speakers, in the same era it was also straight wire with gain.

so....what headphone you have will play a more significant role than the player.
what cha got?
True true. I got Ultimate ears Super Fi5 EBs.

ok, i see the d2 is out of the running and with the hps you have you really could run anything ampless. when i was looking at the d2 and sflo it was rafa that actually pointed me to the d2. been very happy with it; thanks rafa! i got a great deal 16 gb player, norve case, chargers, 16gb card (class6) and full of music that i would only listen to if you held a gun to my head. i put a flash skin that makes album art verticle on 2/3s of the screen. the players now full of music that other people would listen to only if i held a gun to thier heads.

i have another dap on the way, a sansa fuze v1 that will get rockboxed.
i choose a player based on 1. sound quality 2. value 3. expandabilty/codecs like flac/slot 4. ease of use 5. versatility (video etc) 6. size 7. support

maybe you should edit the title to reflect the recent options like the sony?
good luck in your search.

Done

Well to me SQ, size/portability, UI is the most important to me. Battery life too but its not as much as the other 3 cause Im always running my DAP off the charger when at work anyways.

Coming from a former Ipod nano user and Zune user, I cant stress this enough but I ABSOLUTELY NEED A PLAYER THAT DOESNT REQUIRE ANY MANUFACTURERS S/W AND ALLOWS SEEMLESS DRAG AND DROP FOR MP3s. I never watch videos on my DAP so that is irrelevant.

How much amp?
Price wise: Sony X 16GB= S:Flo2 + US dollar $150.
So, $150 amp make it S:Flo2 sound better than Sony X ?
i would really go with walkman X. The s:flo2 have some UI issue to fix. It is the only reason why i cancelled my s:flo order because of this. i had a glitchy mp3 which cause me alot of headache just to re start and load everything , etc. For your piece of mind go with the X.

Well, yes, but low-power portable components (especially DAPs using internal amps) could lead to aenemic bass, especially depending on the headphones. It would've been more useful had the OP mentioned what headphone he's pairing this with, but I scarcely think that, given proper consideration to headphones, one shouldn't also fully consider the selection of source and amp as well.

the op has the UE5eb hardly a problematic impedence curve on those. had sennheiser 650s been mentioned... well, what you said!
