In search of DC power supply for CMoy

Hi,

I recently decided to put a DC plug on my Cmoy amp. I was curious if I could use a plug from one of my other electronics? Any recommendations or suggestions would be great. I am looking to keep the price low in the same fashion the amp was. Thank you for any suggestions!

You can use any DC supply you want, so long as you stay below the supply max for your op-amp. Linear regulators tend to be quieter, but I've used a switching supply from a laptop with no issue. You just need to make sure that you wire up + to positive and - to gnd on your board. This varies from supply to supply so you need to read it carefully.

tangent has a TREAD board (317 based) and amb has a s25 board (7805 based).

either will be just fine for a cmoy.

or, get a wall wart and make sure its 'heavy'. ie, the ones that seem 'empty' are switching supplies (you want to avoid those for analog audio). get one that seems to have some mass to it (trafo inside is the telltale).

Hey Everybody,

Thank you all for your responses. I was plugging random cables in to see if any of the warts sitting in my drawer would fit. I came cross a power adapter for one of my seagate external hard drives. I have enclosed a picture below to show you and ask if that sounds ok? I prefer free if possible as I am sure most of us do :-) All the best

P.s. I went with the recommended amp: Dual op-amp OPA2132PA

Would this require setting up a ground?

I've used the RadioShack RS 273-1662 mentioned in Chu Moy's article "A Pocket Headphone Amplifier" and it works great with my CMoy's and PIMETA v1.

A friend to whom I sold a CMoy uses a 12V adapter originally for his wireless telephone and it works great too.

cheers!

I'd try it. If you have noise, replace it, if not you are good.

Thanks everybody. I gave the one I posted a try and I hear no difference between the battery power or DC. I guess seagate decided to build a higher quality ac-dc wart. Thanks to everybody for your help.

or, the cap you use in your cmoy is filtering enough so that the noise is now below the audible level.

sounds like you found a solution, then
