Travelers Insurance Can U Believe This !!!

I got my auto insurance renewal package the other day. There was an item that read: Information used to rate your insurance policy >>> My wife was in a car accicdent in Nov 2007. Yes she was. A car backed into her. The person that backed into her twisted the story and said my wife hit her from behind. That person went to the hospital and got $5500.00 from Travelers Insurance. The police that responded to the accident said there was no damage on either car. I did not know that Travelers paid this claim until several days age. I spoke with several people at Travelers to express my outrage and told them to get the $5500.00 back since this was fraud. They told me to take a hike. So I did to Geico. I got the same policy for $246.00 less. The exact same coverage. After I signed up with Geico, Travelers offered to reduce the premium by $200.00 I told them to take a hike.

What's your take on this...pro or con

Don't worry about the $5,500. That's their problem, not yours. As long as it didn't come out of your pocket and your wife didn't get any points for the accident, don't sweat it.

That money is often referred to as the "meatball" in the business. They cough it up to make the claim go away, not necessarily because it's your fault. If they got sued, it would probably cost them at least $5k to have an attorney review the case and begin litigation. It makes economic sense to pay out a bit rather than drop five figures (or more) on litigation. Even assuming they litigated it to a win, they could easily be out $50k, $60k or more. This was entirely an economic decision - I know because I see cases discussed in terms of cost all the time. Many decisions are made solely on what it would cost to defend.

That being said, insurance companies are scum. Never hesitate to drop one for a lower rate. Or any other reason, for that matter. They don't deserve customer loyalty.

Sound like a Pro to me.
The story got you to move on to a different insurance company, and at the same time saving you a nice sum of money.

Uncle Erik: I agree with everything that you said but the money did come out of my pocket in two ways. 1) Paying for the policy 2) Paying more for the policy because of the claim. Other then that, you are right on target as usual.

Having worked with them, or attempted to, for a number of years...I couldn't agree more!

Two thumbs up!!
I moved from Allstate to Progressive a couple of years ago and couldn't be happier at my decision. Allstate just kept raising my rates and Progressive keep dropping them.

My daughter had a very small minor "car accident" which resulted no damage to my car and small paint chip on the other truck (according to them). The insurance claim inspector determined there is no damage to either cars to be compensated and the chip in his truck cannot possibly be from that accident. But the other party claimed his wife is in hospital due to injury sustained from this accident and also called police two hours later that my daughter did "hit and run" from the scene. This is after they fully exchanged info that include name, address and insurance company to each other.

The police came to my home and ask for my daughter. At this point, I was furious with the other party. With little explaining the situation, the police decided that my daughter did everything accordingly and left. However, the other party started calling me that I have to pay the hospital fee and "repair fee" for his truck since my insurance has refused their claims. He finally said, if I give him $650 cash, he will drop this ridiculous charge.

I called the police and my insurance company to complaint his behaviors. My insurance inspector told me he will take care of it. Making long story short, my insurance company ended up paying $650 to this low life scum for his so called "truck damage". But at least they flatly refused to pay any hospital fee. In order for them to claim hospital fee, there must be crooked doctor out there falsely claiming this injury was sustained from that accident. I absolutely loathe these kind of behaviors from anybody. They basically make up any story for some money. This is one of the reason that all of honest people out there ended up paying higher insurance premiums.

One of my friend who works in the insurance industry told me they often pay out these way for pure economic reason. It is cheaper for them in the long run.

There are scumbags and lowlifes out there. My family also got in one of those situation. My brother hit a bus. The bus was stopping and my brother just hit it from the rear. His car was a mitsubishi galant, and his speed is around 20-30 miles per hour. Regardless, there's quite a damage in his car but none on the bus. Police called and there's no injury reported on the bus. We thought it end there. Voila, 1 month away from 2 years statutory ended, we got a complaint of 'bodily injury' from one of the passenger. They're asking for $20k. Our insurance, Geico, settled it out of court for around $4-5k. I prayed for this payment to cover his next injury. Our court system should change, the loser should pay the other party's legal fees to reasonable extent so we can make it expensive for those frivolous lawsuit to test their chance.
