Input caps + interstage caps + output caps... something is a little funky.

Certainly not the most elegant I've seen. And it's single ended running off a single supply, hence all the coupling caps.

But the funkiness is part of its charm.

I kind of like the SOL amp for the funk - SE MOSFET

I liek Steves idea of a single transformer better for elegance

I kind of the the PRR-SOL. See post #12 for the schematic and post #10 where PRR gives us the education as to the changes.

From what I can tell, it's a pretty authentic 1960s sort of design; single supplies and coupling caps were de rigeur back then. It's easy to sneer at it, but I would not be at all surprised if it not only measured extremely well but sounded quite good, to boot.

I've been playing around with a very similar design, adapted from a preamp schematic published in '67. It sounds quite good with BC327s, but I've got a bunch of old germanium transistors coming from the FSU to play with. Will it be "funky"? Probably. Will it sound good? We'll see.

What an unfortunate -=name=- for a headphone amplifier......

Beat me to it - it was an immediate reflexive thought. Funny how some things make lasting impressions.

I had a similar, but I believe unrelated, reaction.

My first thought was 'thermal runaway'.

But of course it wasn't JUST a transformer. It was followed by a er, follower.

Actually I have a bunch of 2N1309's here that I was planning to try for a headphone buffer. 1:1 input trannie -> germanium emitter follower.

Someday...

or "the shortest distance between any two points is: the chassis!"
