Greatest Director in the History of Cinema

Title says it all.

It's almost impossible to break this down to just ten out of the multitude of great directors in cinema history, but I'll make the effort with no cop-outs and create the shortlist without any reservations.

I think the 10 directors I've included in the poll are easily within the Top 20 of all-time so these are good choices imho.

I'm not going to include an "other" option since that's just too easy. You guys have to make a choice

FWIW, I also heavily considered Andrei Tarkovsky and Yasujiro Ozu. Also Wilder, Dreyer, Lean, Godard, Woody Allen, Truffaut and Murnau to a lesser extent.

A good and varied selection there, I only somehow miss someone representing the current line of master directors (I find Scorsese heavily over-rated ), I think either Jim Jarmusch, David Lynch, the Coens or Terry Gilliam deserves a spot.
But I regard Fellini higher than all of those, so no real harm.

My favorite is Ingmar Bergman, though I love everyone on the list.

But where's Ed Wood?

Heavily overrated or just not my cup of tea. I don't really know which it is.

Good poll. Touch choice! Bergman and Hitchcock are my toss up for greatest contributors to the cinema, even though my sentimental choice is Stanley Kubrick. But as far as FILM directors go (Bergman seemed to concentrate later on in life more on performance than cinema), I voted for Alfred because he was such a master craftsman when it came to putting bits of celluloid together.

Spielberg?

John Ford?

+1 for David Lynch deserving a spot. :-)

All those directors are fantastic though, so no real complaints.

No Tarkovsky?

Darren Aronofsky and Quentin Tarantino. Of the list I choose Sergio Leone, a Western master.

Those are all great directors. And 50 years from now, classes will analyse all of them for their contribution to cinema. From that list however, I like Scorsese the most. Personal preference.

That being said, I am a huge Paul Thomas Anderson fan. There Will Be Blood is one of my favorite films.
