ebay shipping costs

so I bought a tiny little tube from ebay, he turned around and charged me $20 to ship to Canada. package came very late, on the front is the USPS sticker with postage paid - $1.49.....
do I open a complaint with ebay? I emailed the seller but don't expect to hear anything...
really sucks
I have been noticing this with a few purchases, especially tubes, especially when I know I won an auction for less than the seller was hoping to get!

If you know the shipping cost upfront, you have no complaint.

The listing should have stated what shipping was going to be. If you weren't willing to pay, you shouldn't have bid. If it wasn't stated specifically for Canada, the most you can do is still just leave negative feedback. Next time, ask for a quote before bidding if you're worried about shipping.

I always ask when I buy for an invoice with the cheapest shipping, but by then the deal is done and shipping is not usually solidified at time of sale. If the buyer says yes $20 is the cheapest I can do" then I get the package and it says $1.94, then I get peeved but apart from feedback, I think I am SOL.
Sorry I am fairly new at ebay...so if I win an auction, then the seller sticks me with a high and obviously bloated shipping fee, can I back out of the original sale?

Never eBay.
Ever.
But that's me.

Always ask ahead of time. If auction time is running down or you think someone will buy it now, let them.

To be fair, setting a high shipping and low item fee often time means the seller gets hit with less eBay fees, and a lot of the time that can mean cheaper goods for you.

So it's not all bad, you just have to wary.

Well for me there was this one seller that I was interested in. He was selling the cans I was prospecting to buy and asked him if he could understate the value so I won't be taxed during customs. He said the declared value is taken directly off the ebay auction page hence he has no control over it. I found this somewhat very hard to believe especially in light of other sellers having done quite the opposite. The guy wasn't even an authorized dealer and claims to sell excessive merchandise he receives from an authorized one whose contract w/ the associated brand requires him to meet a certain minimal amount of sales per month. Too many unverifiable assertions that in the end I didn't go w/ him.

Understating values on customs forms is technically fraud. Some sellers will do it as a favor but you shouldn't expect it.

Probably right it's fraudulent. Nevertheless some do and I've seen retailers outside of ebay do this including one reputable amp maker that is highly regarded amongst head-fiers whose name of course I won't disclose.

You are a pee pee head for not getting the shipping cost up front and paying for it. You deserved everything you got. Take after this man:

I buy stuff from ebay all the time. If the shipping charges from a particular ebayer are too high, or not listed. I don't purchase from that guy. Simple as that.

eBay does care about sellers charging exorbitant shipping rates to lower their seller fees, but you probably aren't going to get any joy from them if you already paid and received the item. The mistake you made is not clarifying what shipping method the seller was going to use. If you had specifically paid for Priority and they sent it by First Class to stiff you, you would have a very good case with PayPal.

It is probably worth making a complaint to eBay or even taking some action with PayPal, because if you're quoted $20 on a USPS shipment, there is a reasonable assumption it won't be coming by First Class for $2. Keep the negative feedback in reserve until you know the outcome of your other complaints.

Ebay WILL take your side BUT you made one mistake which was paying for the item. You should have just reported it before hand, and if the seller violated the rules, he would be forced to give you a fair statement, but by paying for the item it technically says you were okay with the terms and proceeded anyways.

Do check the shipping costs on anything you get through Ebay. Some of these charges are out of this world.
