There may be some generic Chinese units on eBay. I know HLLY is going to make a DAC with the PCM1704 in it, but I wouldn't trust those people at all.

I bought a DACMagic in Dec 2008 and compared it (directly) with a ZeroDAC (Upgrade version: OPA627) and I ended up selling the DACMagic and keeping the ZeroDAC, I found the ZeroDac, which is half the price of the DACMagic nicer to listen to in just about every respect.

I then bought an Audio-GD DAC-19MK3 last year and found that compred to the ZeroDAC the the quality was again improved quite noticeably...more detail, wider soundstage with a nice depth to it, instruments sounded more "real"...

In my opinion, having owned both the DACMagic and Audio-GD DAC-19MK3, the DACMagic is over priced and over hyped and is certainly not in the same league...

The rest of my setup consists of a SqueezeBox Classic 3, Marantz PM7001 and Wharfedale Diamond 10.1's (Kef iQ1s when the comparison between the ZeroDAC and DACMagic was done)...

Would you quit beating around the bush and tell us what you really think about the DACMagic?

I know we all hear differently, but the DacZero, I prefer music straight out of my laptop . Where you using Apple ibuds and no amp?

I'm sorry, but when I heard the DACZero, I really just laughed. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but there are many, many more of us who disagree!

I humbly disagree...boy do I disagree!

This is actually making me laugh that it's so absurd!

I've posted many professional reviews and links to threads from very respected head-fiers on the DacMagic, if you could please show me some similar links to professional reviewers and head-fiers who prefer the ZeroDac to the Cambridge Audio offering I would really appreciate it!

Yea, the analog stage makes or breaks its. I've tried several configurations and nothing comes close to what AudioGD has pulled off.

I think you misunderstood my point. I don't doubt that to your ears the DACMagic is superior to many others. But if you are saying that you really do prefer your music straight out of your laptop rather than through a Zero Dac then you have just lost credibility in my eyes. I agree that the Zero is an entry level DAC and can easily be bested, but it is still alot better than just playing music through a laptop. But of course we all hear differently.

You want even better output from it? Make yourself some ACSS-to-RCA passive I/V cables with Vishay resistors. I've described in several threads how this is done.

Didnt you go from ACSS to XLR? i thought you stayed balanced with those cables. Though i could jsut be remembering wrong
post #102 of 207
Yes, I did because my DAC is balanced. But the DAC19 is not.

Why would we need any professional reviews here? He just stated his opinion which is just as valuable as yours. I hate how you try to downplay other opinions.

x2

Macedonian, you reacted the same way when I mentioned that the only three comparisons I found between the DAC-19MK3 and DacMagic all came out preferring the former. You said that there were "many" who would disagree in the DacMagic thread, and when I asked you to post links to those comparisons, well.. uh, it turned out there weren't any.

shampoosuicide: Hi to a fellow SG-er
Are you looking to get the DSP too?
