Marantz SA-11s1 problem

Thread Starter
My SA-11s1 is starting to not read CD's and SACD's (out of warranty). I get "can't play" or "no disc" after it tries to read the T.O.C. The problem is intermittent and the same disc will usually load successfully after a few tries. Once it loads, it plays fine. And it sounds fabulous.

Anyone else experience this with Marantz CD players (this player in particular)?

According to Marantz, the entire loader and transport system is replaced as one unit (about $82.00). I'm tempted to just replace the transport - but wonder what others did? Laser lens cleaning?

Any insights thanks - before I rip the thing apart.

Is this an issue with every CD/SACD? Have you checked the cd for scratches and what not?

If this is persistent, then $82 is the best way to go.

same prooblem with SA15S1

Hi,
I have the same problem with the SA15S1, an increasing number of CD's fails, especially the Super Audio CD's, in the beginning it was ok after a few times opening and closing, but it got worse and some SACD just don't read anymore. I am bringing the player to my dealer tomorrow, I don't think it is the lens, otherwise I would have it with all CD's after a while.
I let you know what marantz proposes as a solution. I am a little disappointed, especially when you notice that the S2 versions have other mechanisms.

Update

I just received from Marantz a replacement 'mechanism' which includes the laser pickup. The part includes the CD drawer motors, and connections. It's interesting that the lasser pickup is an Hitachi HOP-1200W. The part cost $82.00 (reasonable).

I also bought from an electronics supply house just the laser pickup for $20.00.
This part is Hitachi HOP-1200R.

The "R" is the original OEM part. I wonder if the "W" they are now using is an improvement to avoid this problem. Don't know.

I will replace the entire assembly this weekend. Although - my player has been working fine lately.
