Yeah,as the title say my question is Why did you buy a iRiver H1xxx or H3xxx or any other iRiver player.
Well i started with IFP 390T wich had 256 mb wich i read about it in a computer magazine back in 1999,since then i tried and owned lots of them players becouse of fucntions, battery life and the most important thing sound quality.
Fell free to tell us about you iRiver experiences.

I bought an H320 a couple years ago for the explicit purpose of installing Rockbox. I started using Rockbox with my Archos Jukebox 20 and I wanted to try Rockbox with a color screen.

It served me well. I had some issues with replacement batteries ballooning. For the most part it was fun to use although I eventually replaced it with a Sansa e280 (Rockboxed) and a Zune.

I bought an iHP-120 for its optical out and I use it as a transport only for my iBasso D10 and its Rockbox upgradeable. As important if not more so, with Rockbox, it is forward modifiable, with adapters, to use flash memories - SDHC, CF, SSD, and even perhaps SDXC.

indeed, the reason most of us bought H120/140's was that it was the only unit that had spdif-out, and could also be rockboxxed

Got my H120 for the optical out too. Its fantastic. I also use it as a portable recording device with the Line-In. Rockbox is great.

Got my H320 thanks to a recommendation and my good experience with an iFP-590T, and I still use it to this day (albit with a 2200mha battery, rockbox and a 32GB CF card).

I got my H140 in 2004, pre-Rockbox era. I'd had an Archos JB6000, and then in 2003 switched over to an iPod 3G - which was such an appalling piece of equipment... it got 6 hours of battery life at best, and it crashed a lot, then it finally died completely after 9 months of ownership. Plus I hated the lack of filetree nav and I hated iTunes. After an unpleasant tech support/genius bar experience I decided to take my new warranty-replaced iPod and sell it on eBay, and bought the iRiver with the proceeds. Simply because it was the best player on the market at the time.

I used it as my main player for a long time until I switched over to flash-based players. Now I use it for stealth concert recordings. Still works perfectly and still gets great battery life with the original battery. There's something to be said for being built like a tank!

I also had an iRiver Clix 2GB for a while, I absolutely love the GUI and the whole user interface, it's a brilliant DAP. Unfortunately they never sold any in sufficient capacity for my needs so I ended up giving to someone who loved it and used it every day until she broke it, at which point I found her another one (2nd gen) on eBay, which she is still using.

iHP-140. Got it because its got optical out. Rockboxed, it still performs well to this day.

I got 3x h320 and 1x h120. I put a 32gb cf card in a h320 and use it very often.

I think the line out sounds great. The headphone out hisses quite a bit so I use it with my less sensitive iems.

Also ROCKBOX!

Rockbox. Period.

I got an iriver h340 5 years ago in 2005 as I was moving away to uni and wanted something I could watch movies on, read text, listen to tunes obv, listen to radio, record lectures etc etc list is endless on that device. Chose it as it was the single most fully featured and multi functional player on the market at the time and I it was toward the end of its product life when I bought it so i got a stonking deal too.

Started acquiring h120's and 40's and done various mods mainly concerning storage and battery life mainly chose it owing to the optical but the fact its an iriver just makes it all the more sweet.

At the time was looking for a replacement to minidisc. Didn't like the look of itunes (still don't to this day, though I've learnt to be more tolerant of it on a mac. It's just about passable but still hate it). So went with Iriver 120. Loved the sound, build quality (colleague at work has been through two ipod classics whilst the iriver is still kicking, getting about 8 hours or so out of the original battery!). Even though I have now gone over to the ipod touch 2nd gen the iriver is still getting good use as lent it to a colleague who didn't have an mp3 and has an allergy to all things apple! I've also said that if Iriver had brought out an updated modernised version of the 120 I would have bought it like a shot.

I got an "ihp-140" when they first came out. It had a real lineout and was a virtual swiss army knife with recording, radio, multi codecs, DRM free, and upgradeability etc.

Once the MicroDAC came out (and later the D10) the bar for "portable" sound quality was raised to an incredible level using the optical out. I've since bought two more h-140's and an H120 for my wife. They're all upgraded in one way or another and have been incredible. In fact, I've never had a crash on any of them going back to the begining (2004?).

I keep thinking I'll move on to the next pinnacle of portable sound when it comes out...but I'm still waiting. The Hifiman is still unproven in my eyes, and I'm sure the next improvement in portable DAC's will only serve to improve the H1xx's standing.

There is simply no other option to h120\140 if you are going to use an external high-quality dac\amp. Add a beefy battery and 120 gb hdd, rockbox it, add a high quality external dac\amp and that's it. It is really a no-brainer.

I have both Cowon S9 and iRiver H340 and i can tell you that H340 with rockbox 3.5 and my W3 sound amazing, much better then S9.The sound is so much detailed,clear..
I really like it.I am waiting for CF-1.8 hdd adaptor to mod with a 32 CF Kingston.Even if i will go from 40 gb to 32 i don't care.I wish my player to be much lighter, slimmer and no internal moving parts.
Anybody here who have both H120 and H340 can compare the sound quality from headphones on both devices?Cheers,Levi
