Music Production Headphones

Hey guys. I was wondering which headphones would be the best for producing Electronic Dance music such as house & trance. I have searched a bit & some results have came up but nothing too specific.

I don't think the genre of music really matters because I basically want them to be as flat as possible within my price range of £200. Yes I know this probably isn't alot of money but I have studio monitors already, but due to my room not being acoustically treated I have problems with room modes, ringing etc.

I will want closed earphones so I can't hear the reverb of the room. Correct me if I'm wrong but do some headphones add some minor artificial reverb... if so I could really do without that as well.

The headphones would also need to be able to handle transients well due to the obvious nature of the dynamics in dance music.

Finally as I have said previously, my main concern is having a flat frequency response so I can try & accurately judge my mixes without going to 30 other speakers(Yes I will still reference but hopefully not as much as I used to)

Thanks for any help guys

Dynamics are more or less non-existing in modern dance music. You can't go wrong with the Audio Technica A900's. Some people also tend to use the DT770's, but I'm not too impressed with their sonic capabilities. I saw the producers behind Britney Spears used the DT770's.

Also, it's worth checking out the D2000's as well as the studioline models from AKG, ie. k272, k242 etc.

You want something as neutral as possible, so the music doesn't end up being too bassy, bass light, have shrilling high's etc. dT48 and AKG K271 are good for this. DT880 wouldn't be bad either, is is more neutral than DT770 and DT990, but also does have good bass. You are probably going to want another pair of cans to listen to it, to see if it sounds right to you.

I use Grados on my recordings because I need a nice open midrange and cans that get strings right. Works well for me.

I see you wanted closed phones. I like the Denons quite a bit as well.

I will prefer using the HD 25's

DT250 is supposed to be very flat. It seems pretty close to my ears. I'm not sure you need closed though, to produce dance music. Acix can probably chime in about the merits of the k702 if you don't.

I got very good results with the K702, here more info: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/k702-studio-393139/ BTW, you'll need some sound card too.

Closed studio use. SRH840, ATH-M50, M-AUDIO Q40? DT250 also very nice in this aspect.

Reading now Acix. I currently have a esi maya44 I really don't want to upgrade it any time soon as it has served me well. Will it be good enough or is it just plain crap?

How do HDJ2000's do for this purpose?

That's a DJ headphone. That's for scratching on stage in a club, not for producing music.

I'm not sure about the esi maya44, I had a good experience with the NI Kontrol 1 and the PreSonus FireBox you can find them both in a great prices on ebay.
The next level of sound card will be the Apogees and the RME.

You also can start with M-50/GMP 8.35, the K-271MKll will be a good option but not so much bass.
