2010 Winter Olympics - do you care? - Page 3

I really don't care for them at all. In fact, I think it's pathetic how every country that hosts the Olympics tries to sweep everything under the rug and make their city seem like picture perfect utopia for the world to see. Personally, I think the Olympics is just a play-nice way for people to satisfy their inner racist, seeing which country (in reality, race) is better.

I cannot wait for the opening ceremonies tomorrow. I have been waiting for the Winter Olympics since the summer ones ended. I mean honestly who doesn't want to see someone from Ghana try and ski?

From the all-time Winter Olympics standings I guess it is fair to have some high expectations.
As a Norwegian that is...

Sure I care. I mean who knows what headphones, or more likely IEMs, we may discover our prominent international winter athletes appreciate.

I lived in Atlanta for those Olympics and still have fond memories of the two weeks or so. Last night, the History Channel had a special on the preparation for the Olympics and all the Vancouver area did as well as how the athletes train. Fascinating.

I agree--should be amateur status only. But then again, as others said, at this level could be hard.

Fnally: what else is there to watch?? College basketball, the occassional "football"--soccer to us--runup to FIFA in June; other than that, not much sports-wise going on here in US Osorry: forgot hockey, but here in Tennessee we don't have professional team for that.

Canada is the only nation to host both a summer and winter olympics and never win a gold medal in either. this time the government created the "Own the Podium" program. Basically they brought in former Soviet trainers and doctors, locked all of our athletes away in a top secret training program for the past few years and genetically enhanced them to become the best of the best. Our female speed skaters may look like Dolph Lungren, but we are determined to Own the Podium this time!!!

I care it's hard not to living in Vancouver.

I'm listening to helicopters fly over head as they follow the torch around the city as it get close to opening day. Walked through downtown on my way home and it was like the day before new years everyone getting ready for a party.

Lots of big wigs, media and security are around, people have got "go canada go" signs hanging out of office windows. It's like a fascist sports dictatorship run by disney has taken over the city. I did see some lovely looking athletes as well.

It's hard not to pick up on the excitement.

I wish there was more focus on the athletics. I used to compete in amateur athletics and I know how much commitment and sacrifice the athletes and their families make to even try to get to the games. It seems a shame that so much money is made off the work and tears of these mostly young folks some who will only finish 7th and be forgotten.

Tragic! Poor guy, hitting an unpadded steel pole at a speed of about 140kmh.
First fatal accident in Winter Olympics since Albertville 1992.
