Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro or Premium? - Page 2

Finally got some extensive time with the portable setup (Cowon D2 and AirHead). Very comfortable listening for extended periods, over 9 hours at a time.

The portable setup doesn't quite have the imaging as does my desktop setup, despite a much more sophisticated amp and using a higher bit rate (in many cases lossless compression). Could either be the noisy airplane environment or else the DAC in the Cowon.

Any thoughts on this?

What's your desktop setup?

Mostly 192kbps (Pandora) for source

I haven't A/B'ed this as pandora makes it difficult to do, but I think many of the tracks on pandora are from different and better masters than the usual CDs.

Or it could all be in my head.

The perceived difference is small, and as mentioned much of it could be due to the difference in background noise.

I need to try out the portable rig outside of a plane sometime.

Just an update to this thread.

With a few hundred hours on the Pro 80s I updated my review.

The main difference is that the bass has evened out. Still slightly heavy, but strong emphasis on the "slight".

I now use no EQ with these phones.

I need really good deep tones, should i go for the pro?

Mostly for music use.

I still think the Pro-80 is hard to beat in its price range, and especially if you want lots of bass impact (without being overly bloated and wildly inaccurate like the Beats)

If you have a guitar store in your area, see if they have them on display, you can try them out and compare to others before you buy.

the bass on the pro and the premium is very different.

i also thought that hte premiums had more detail.

but i suspect that is due to the bass being so up front on the pros

To me, the Pro (250 Ohm) sounded rather bass heavy and boomy out of the box, but that seems to have balanced noticeably over time, and only on some tracks does the bass sound somewhat excessive now. I am not sure if that is simply because of getting used to the sound, or the result of losing seal due to the clamping force getting looser and the ear pads "flattening" from wear (essentially slowly turning the headphone into what the Premium is when new).

There is indeed a bass heavy version.  Back when I originally posted that, it either didn't exist or its existence wasn't widely know, not sure.  I don't think there's any way to figure out what you're going to get if you just order one new from a store.

yeah i think my 32 ohm 770s were bass heavy.

because bass light was not remotely close to an accurate description of them.

but not nearly the midbass hump as my 990s.

just big rich sub bass.

i loved them and miss them dearly.

i hope mr bashot is enjoying them
