its funny that you mention that. I get no noise coming through my amp whatsoever. not unless i crank it, but i never turn it up neeeeeeeeearly enough to introduce that noise. It would have to be ear piercing. and until my zen head comes tomorrow, im using a really crappy amp

I guess thats why i keep doubting whether a dac will really change anything, yet everyone says it does.

When the zen head comes, that will be the first real test. The headphones upgrade to the denons from the sennheiser HD 555's made a huge difference.

According to EVERYONE, the amp upgrade should also make a major difference. And I believe it will. Then i will have to decide if i think a dac will really take it to yet another level...

For me:

#1 a good open headphone (I've been eying the AGK 701)
#2 a dedicated amp (rather than the dac/amp combo)

At this point, the only upgrade I would make in my main rig would be with my source, but since I'm quite pleased with my current source and would need to make a monumental jump for improvements, my current main headphone rig is complete: APL modded Phillips SACD 1000 > Headamp KGBH SE > Stax SR007BL.

Since selling my R10s a couple weeks ago, my dynamic rig needs headphones (Exemplar modded Denon 2900 > tweaked SinglePower Extreme Platinum > ????). The only headphone I'm currently interested in is the Sony 010, size small. If you've got one you want to sell......

My portable rig is currently complete: ipod classic > Whiplash audio mini lod > pico slim > JH13s. I'm listening to it now, and am supremely happy with what I'm hearing. The slim is also proving to be quite good with the 225s.

My office rig (ipod classic > LaRocco PRI > HF2s) could probably use some help, but I don't get to listen to headphones much at all there (maybe a couple hours a week at best), so not much point. It's good enough.

What will be interesting is if I actually stick to what I'm saying one year from now

I could use a source upgrade, my CD changer sucks quite hard... I was thinking a DACMagic and then DIYing up one of those Shigaraki clones.
