Has anyone recabled im616 or im716? Or transplant to iphone buds cable?

I have one pair of Altec Lansing im616 that my cat chewed on, essentially stripping the cable for an inch or two somewhere in the middle. The phones still work, for now, but I'm looking to the future.

I'd like to explore attaching the Altec Lansing's iem's ear pieces to the cable of the buds that came with the iphone, thus creating a decent pair that I can use to answer calls and hopefully use the remote functions on. I'd even consider that with my 716's if it'll turn out ok.

Any thoughts? Has anyone:

1) tried recabling im616's at the earpiece, providing a brand new cable

or

2)tried attaching ANY earpieces to the iphone ibuds to retain their mic/vloume/skip tracks capabilities?

Want to this project at home if possible. Local shops here in Manila don't seem to want to take the risk on such small wires.

Yes. Pretty easy.

Take out the cable from the ipod headphone, remove the top part of the im716/616 headphone by using a needle/thin screwdriver and pressure, desolder the original wires/ add new ipod wires/solder, glue top part back

Is there room in there for a 1206 thick-film smt resistor?
