Just curious since they make everything else related to audio.

Why don't luxury brands like Bose/Shure make portable mp3 players?

Bose and Shure in the same sentence?
Idk, why is a banana oddly shaped?
but on a serious note, I think they wouldn't have the economies of scale and knowledge to create a product that remotely competes with today's mp3 players. We would be talking about serious market limitations, because in the bigger picture (outside of audio forums), the iPod dominates...

Exactly what subhuber said; they wouldn't be able to compete with the mass market players like iPods/Zunes, etc.

I'd say not a profitable market venture. Bose and Shure are two "luxury" products. They'd have to introduce something "high end" that does some amazing gee whizz thing and it'd have to be high priced. Although, shure is a relatively unknown brand so.. anything they make thats cheap will probably be seen as some cheap chinese player perhaps..? *shrug*. No idea.
Why don't Shure and Bose make cars? MP3 and headphone/speaker engineering are completely different.

For that matter... how many companies do both source and earphones? Some Chinese companies (head-direct, amp3) do it, but few others. Nonetheless, that at least some companies are doing it would suggest that the product development and research barriers are not insurmountable..
But perhaps it's a marketing issue? No company wants to be seen as a 'jack of all trades'.

I guess you're right sebhuber. what a foolish question
I was thinking of Sony as both a source and headphone brand, but I see your point. Specializing would be more marketable.
They should.........
