headphone cables:
1. for single-entry phones like K701, how is the shield connected?
2. same question as no.1 except when using phones like HD600

interconnects, how is the shield connected? there are 2 twisted pairs inside. how is this connected?

Thank you very much

For Headphone cables, shield is always connected to ground at the 1/4" Jack. It is not connected on Headphone side. Regardless of headphone.

On Interconnects shield is tied to ground on source end only, such as on the cd player end when connecting to preamp. The cable has an arrow on it, so use this as a guide. Arrow points from CD Player to Preamp.

I always wondered why the high-end RCA cables I bought back in the eighties had a directional arrow. How can a cable be directional? Now I know.

Exactly. The shield tie dictates the direction of flow.

How about an 3-pin XLR connector? EDIT: Balanced Headphone Cable, assuming that I have a dedicated cable per channel (x2 3-pin XLR, x2 Cables) Where would the shield go?

Floats on both ends. Or take a couple of strands and when you twist the 2 legs for right and left include this with the twist and connect to pin 1.
