Might seem a strange question, but are there 4 wires in this cable (even though an SE cable only has 3 connections)?

Not strange at all.
There are 4 wires in - 1 each signal, 2 ground.

Sorry to be so dense. Is 1/4" = 3.5mm normal jack plug size?

What goes into the female side?

Units are a pain, aren't they?

1/4" x 2,54 = 6,35mm ≠ 3,5mm -> so NO
Anyway I've a gold-plated adapter available getting fit your 3,5mm male to my female 1/4" if that helps.

1/4" male <-> 1/4" female -> give a lovely fitting couple together
