Adjust volume on Ipod or car head unit for best SQ?

Simple question -- Should the Ipod or Head Unit be doing most of the amping? I am under the assumption that you should set the Ipod volume about half-way so the signal going to the head unit is a decently strong signal which then can be amped by the head unit.

I have a 5 year-old Eclipse HU and have tried to use the line out from a 5G and a newer iPod. The output is most always too much and overloads the HU. With Rockbox I was able to fix the problem by lowering the gain (precut). I can't Rockbox my newer iPod so I use the HP out. I keep the HU volume at a near max setting(based on CD playing volumes) and adjust the iPod volume...mainly because it's closer to my hand...either method of controlling the volume sounds identical to me.

From what I have read and experienced you should leave the headphone out on the iPod around 75-80 percent and then base your sound on the amp volume after that.

What about the equalizer... should the ipod or car control this.
