I used to be and kicked the habit a little over a year ago. Cold turkey.

That was a nasty one, for sure. I felt like death on a biscuit for about four days, then there was a sudden clarity and I felt great. Didn't expect withdrawal to be so bad, either. After spending four years of drinking heavily (or, as some call it, "undergrad"), I went cold turkey. That was a breeze. Every so often I'd crave beer and I'd stop and tell myself 'no' and find something else to do.

But caffeine gave me headaches, assorted pains and more than a bit of irratibility. It was miserable. But it's been great since. My sleep dramatically improved and I feel great in the morning. My sleep schedule normalized and I can pull off late nights with no problem.

Funny, because I expected the opposite. I figured I'd be drowsy all morning and sleepy in the evenings. But that didn't happen and it worked out really well.

If you're willing to subject yourself to a few days of withdrawal, I recommend getting off caffeine. You'll feel great.

Yes, I do miss having a hot cup of coffee in the morning. But the cravings aren't that bad and I've come to appreciate water that much more.

I used to be, there for several years i was drinking far too much mountain dew for my own good. But then when i decided to join the air force, i realized i wouldnt want to go through withdrawls while at basic training, so a month before hand i quit cold turkey, and like UE said, i spent like a week pretty much asleep the whole time, and when i wasnt sleeping, i was pretty irratable, and not good tempered. Now i have soda periodically, like only when i go out to eat, and even then only a couple glasses. I can really tell that im healthier drinking water more often now.

Funny that this thread should pop up now, considering I quit drinking coffee around 4 or 5 days ago. I found that coffee was destroying my sleep patterns and was making my anxiety even worse.
Already my sleep has corrected itself, and my anxiety has decreased dramatically.

I switched to tea and never looked back. Tea > coffee.

Still has the caffeine though.

I have a mild physical addiction (mild headache when a day or to without it), but a strong mental addiction.
It's simply just too good to give up, though I keep the daily intake at a moderate level.

I feel exactly the same way. I had a bad addiction via coffee back in college which I was able to get over with little trouble. Problem is I was also badly addicted all through college and the next 2 years (midway through 2009)on soda. I used to have the exact same symptoms you did, and felt like hell when I dropped soda cold turkey. Now I drink maybe a can a month at most and I feel much better.

I quit caffeine cold turkey for about 3 months a few years ago. I was drinking about 8/9 cups a day, and pretty non-functional without it. I gave up not only coffee and tea, but cola and chocolate as well. For a few days I felt really *sadface*, but then I could feel myself being a bit healthier, sleeping better and generally having more (and more reliable) energy throughout the day. After a few weeks though, this wore off, and I felt just the same again.

The first cup of coffee to break my caffeine-sabbatical hit me very hard. I was buzzing for ages.

Are you sure you're not addicted to something else?

I drink only 12-16oz, bu I do so every day. I think the caffeine was going ashes to ashes on my arse, so I try only to drink when I need to do serious studying or homework.
