If so, how do you perform your acts of cinephilia? Through DVDs, tapes, theaters?

I only watch avant garde films, produced by eccentric film makers.

I am a huge cinema guy. If there's a movie i absolutely have to see, i'll see in theatre's. If the movie was really enjoyable for me, it used to be dvds, but now its blu ray that i'll be buying. Once you go HD you never go back! My bookshelf is getting filled up pretty quickly..

Not the slightest.
Have not been to the cinema the last year or so, and do not have a standalone DVD player at home. I manage very well without

If I want to see a movie, it's in either theaters or on my projector. I'm never satisfied with the quality of my home cinema experience, so I'm always trying to do little tweaks and adjustments to make it better. I never waste a movie on my laptop, computer, cable tv or friend's house. It has to be on a projector of some sort.

As for film, depends. I love watching some of the acting more so than the art of video. Some of my classic favorites are well known actors in their prime or in a not so well known film. I don't watch as many movies as I used to however

Every film that seems interesting, I will see. Watch about 50-70 movies every year. I own 100's of movies, I only buy them if I think they are worth it.

I used to be really into movies during high school. I managed to have a DVD collection of over 250 movies, but I don't watch many movies nowadays. I do have a HUGE collection of HD movies on my comp and it's growing all the time, but the only time I really watch movies is on the weekends. I guess I'm kind of saving up movies for when I have my own house and I can build my home theater.

What is everyone's favorite director? Mine might have to be Quentin Tarantino, or Kevin Smith (loved his earlier stuff).

I was more thinking of a cinefile as the type of people who buy $10,000 projectors and make permanent screen installations in their homes.
I do own a projector I got for $50 off ebay. Only 1024x768, but works great.

As far as movies and directors:

My top 3 directors are: Tarkovsky, Kirosawa, Kubrick
Top 3 Films: 2001 A Space Odyssey (Kubrick), Stalker (Tarkovsky), Ran (Kirosawa)

I'd probably put David Fincher as my favorite director. And yes, I will have a kick ass home theater when I have my own home My DIY endeavors will have paid off in the long run. My home theater addiction will definitely trump my headphone addiction by a long shot when the day comes!

there is as much definitions of cinephiles as there is of audiophiles... A lot of the cinephiles don´t care at all about gear just the movies themselves

I am more about the movie itself. My home setup even though not extreme in any meaning do beat going to the cinema (on non 3D movies ) anyway.

I love movies, but usually watch stuff on line, and if I like it, I'll rent the DVD to watch at home.
I agree with the above post, for me it's all about the movie itself. My brother made a movie a few years back and won an award from the Independent Spirit Awards. He had about 5 grand to spend on the movie. Although it wasn't the greatest movie, it proved it's point and was entertaining to watch for what it is.

I hate hollywood. They lost their way a long time ago for me when Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark stopped being produced. Now, I just don't care about movies at all, but I watch the occasional DVD that I rent from my local public library out of sheer boredom. I haven't had a good laugh or tearful scene move me to become a cinephile. It just doesn't do it for me whatsoever. Plus, I find all of the paparazzi and gossip shows and sites off putting. Leave these people alone!

Oh well, back to the music and more audio gear.

The pronunciation of cinephile sounds too similar to cinnaphile (Those who enjoy delicious cinnamon buns).

I love movies, but I don't rush out and buy the latest or go to a theatre unless it's a special occasion or a really good movie. I have a 46" Sharp Aquos, a Playstation 3 for blu-rays and a basic Yamaha home theatre rig, so my movie watching isn't bad, but not super fantastic.

I suppose i am, but a friend of mine - actually my oldest and closest friend - once remarked, "for a guy who hates movies, you sure seem to watch a lot of them".

DVDs. Have a projector and surround sound system at home. Also I love watching old movies and can't find them in the cinemas.
