How are you doing your taxes this year?

So, how does everyone plan to do their taxes this year? Yourself, accountant, online? I think I'll be doing mine through TurboTax; this is the first time I'm on my own for taxes. Last year my parents had their accountant do mine. I don't have any difficult things; just my job, savings account, and 401k should be all I need to report.

I don't know crap about taxes, deductions and all that fun stuff, so hells yeah my T4 goes right into the hands of some guy who gets me back money in a few weeks.

For the past 6 years I've been filing online. The service I use keeps my info from last year, so updating a few figures is all I need to do.

I used an accountant when my wife had her business. It was enough work helping manage the business let alone the nit noyd details of tax reporting. Having piece of mind knowing all the necessary schedules and forms were properly filed was well worth the added cost.

Today, TurboTax works well for my reporting needs. I prefer the version you download and install locally instead of entering your data online. I believe my sensitive financial data is safer on my PC especially when you hear of all the reports of hackers compromising corporate databases.

Yeah, I haven't done the research yet but I'll be buying the software. Once you buy it though, do you get free updates for each new tax year, or do you have to buy the new version?

As a semi-related note, I'm sure you've heard about the HealthNet security breach a couple of months ago. Well, even though I have my own different health insurace, my info was still there along with my parents. The good thing is I get a free year of anti identity theft service + free credit checks.

Same as every year - hand my documents to my sister (who is an accountant at a good firm, with software that does my taxes in less time than it takes to walk to the printer to print out my copy)

Not much is free these days. You do not get free updates for each tax year. Each time you start TurboTax it does check for updates which are free to install. I purchase the "basic" package which has free federal e-file. Additional fees apply to buy the optional state form and e-file. At the beginning of the year Intuit starts spamming me with offers to purchase the current year TT program. Often at a discounted rate.

Unfortunately my company had a security breach and my wife and I signed up with an identity theft service, free for 1 year.

I'm using taxslayer like I did last year. It's a pretty good deal for efiling both state and federal it's $10. I was using turbo tax a few years ago, but it's more expensive and taxslayer works just as good. This is actually the first year that I won't be doing my taxes early. No refund this year, I owe money and I'm not sending it in a day before April 15th, I'm not letting uncle sam have my money before it's due date.

My taxes are still simple enough that TurboTax will meet my needs every year. Gotta go buy the new version after I come back from work.
